Got Win 760 need 748

Hi Guys,
I need some advice. Last December I bought three 8lbs cans of Winchester 748. I was shooting .308 Sierra's 168gr. HPBT. I decided to switch and just bought 1,000 Sierra 175gr. HPBT bullets. Guess what? Sierra's book gives data on Winchester 760 not 748.

The three cans haven't been opened yet, so I'm wondering should I try to return the powder to Midway or just go with it? What do you think?

I think you may have your powder supply mixed up or in reverse.

You're contradicting yourself in your own post. You start off saying you bought three 8lb cans of 748 and then say you need 748. Where's the problem?

My apologies guys. I've corrected it now.

You need more than one reloading manual. The Lyman 49th edition shows data for the 175bthp bullet and 748 powder. However, 760 is also a good powder for this caliber. I don't think MidwayUSA will take the powder back. I've never found any company or store that would take returns of powder even if it hasn't been opened.

Since there is only 5 gr. difference between the 180 gr. verses your 175 gr. its acceptable to use the 180 gr. recipe loadings. The web site I would use for that purpose would be Noslers. (link below) Most of their bullets have boat tail construction. Start your search with the use of their suggested w-748 usage concerning the 175-180 gr. bullets. Start low and work your way up slowly by .02 or .03 tenths at a time until you hit the sweet spot of groupings from your rifle. You should be good to go with that 748 you have on hand.

No mention of caliber. So I assume your shooting a 308-Win rifle cartridge.

I do not think powder is returnable.

NoSecondBest, you are a good man to have around, and you are absolutely correct. You just solved my problem.

I have that exact manual on different shelf because it's taller than the others, and I hadn't used in a while so I forgot to check it. I looked at the Sierra, Nosler, and Hornady and came up empty.

Thank you all for responding to my question.

Good deal Eppie. Now, start using up that 24lbs of powder. You must really do a lot of shooting. I thought I had a lot of powder on my bench....

RC20, I'm using .308 cartridge. The brass is actually Federal GMM brass that I've reloaded twice, now starting on the third time. I'm relatively new to reloading, 3 years, and I'm working towards precision ammo that I can use to qualify on the 1,000 yard range at my gun club. I've had a breakthrough, so next week I'm moving out to the 300 yards range.

NoSecondBest, I have to admit that I did go over the top with my powder order of 24 lbs. but I figured that it averaged the cost per pound down a little if I spread the haz mat fee more. There is no point in leaving money in the bank, it earns hardly any interest.

I'm retired and I have time on my hands, so I like to shoot about a 100 rounds of 308 a week always trying new things to improve accuracy. I don't reload for any other caliber right now, but I'm saving my brass for 9mm, .40 and .45. If prices don't come down I may start reloading those also.
Thanks again, for your interest.
