Good slow-burning powder for the .30-06
What is a good slow-burning powder for the .30-06? I use IMR 4350, I think it's moderately slow, not sure though. I normally use 180 grain bullets but I'm thinking of using maybe 150-165 grain bullets.

IMR 4350 is Perfect for the 150 grain class of bullets for the 30-06, we've been shooting that combo with deadly precision since the late eighties.
You'll want to work up from minimum, and FIND that perfect load for your rifle, I guarantee you will like the performance. We use Ballistic Tips from Nosler, for deer hunting and have always had good luck with those dudes. However the bullet choice you make will be fine just test some and see for yourself. I bet I have handloaded 1000 or more using that bullet /powder combo.

A target load I still use, when I feel like dragging the old thunder stick out for long range or midrange matches is a 168/175 SMK with 55.0 grains IMR 4350. I have also used AA4350 and H4350, whether the charge is 56 grs or 55 grains depends on the particular lot of powder.
It is hard to beat IMR 4350 in the 30-06. Don't use IMR 4350 in a Garand or any gas gun as the port pressure will be too high. I shot these 20 round prone slow fire targets (with irons) with surplus WC 852, a ball powder. Accurate Arms makes this powder new as AA2700. This powder works well in a number of large capacity cases like the 270 Win, the 6.5 Swede, 7.5 Swiss, going to try it in the 300 H&H soon.

Slamfire, how about telling us about that rifle.
--------------------------------------------------------------------- Presonally I don't like slow burning powder in the '06, not because it don't work but because I load for two many 30-06 rifles, including my Garand, M917, M1903a3, M-70 Vietnam Era Sniper Rifle Clone. I don't want different loads for that many rifles. I use 4895 which was designed for the 30-06. But slow powders do work in bolt guns. Besides 4350, 4831 is another excellent slow burning powder for the '06 or 270 (I do used those two powders in my 270 and use 4350 in my Krag.

IMR 4831 is `bout as slow a powder as ya wanna go in the 06.
With 150 jacketed my 700 loves IMR4064, Blc2 & WW748 in that order.

Totally uncompetitive in today's highpower or long range, but I like antiques.

It's hard to beat 4064 under 150 Hornady, Speer, or Sierra.
