Folks: All of my reloading info lists data
for .223 Remington. I am looking for a new loadbook to buy that has loads for the military version which is a bit hotter. IIRC the Nato spec for 55 gr FMJBT out of a 20" bbl is 3350 fps. None of the .223 loads meet that spec. Can anyone point me to the load book I need? Thanks, Danm |

Danm, about the closest listing I can find is in the Hodgdon No.27 Data Manual. This lists a 55gr. Hornady MJBT bullet with 28.0grs. of RL-15 producing 3390fps. This is a maximum load. The overall cartridge length is listed as 2.215" and a 24" barrel was used. Hope this helps!

Not certain, but the MV you mentioned sounds a bit high. I think that 3200 would be more like it.
As for powder, with 55 gr. fmj bullets, you might try WC846. Do not offhand recall the loads, but this was a Winchester military surplus powder, used for 7.62mmNATO and the 5.56mm round, with 55 grain bullets. You might write to Winchester(Olin) at St. Marks, Florida, their powder plant is located there. They were heplful to me, some years back, and might still be. |

Danm, The reloading manuals that I have seem to have some of the Accurate powders(2230,2015,2460,2495,2520) all at or near the velocity you desire in a 55 gr. bullet. RL15 and Varget also are powders that show up in in data for that weight and velocity. MY sources of info are Accurate Reloading Manual, Metallic Cartridge Reloading, Lyman 47th Reloading Manual and the data that came with my Lee .223 dies.
Good Luck |

Thanks guys. Alan you are correct, I
mistyped, the actual spec is 3250 +- 40 at 15 feet from a 20" bbl. My Lymans and Accurate lists loads for this velocity, but from a 24" or 26" bbl. in .223. - Danm |

With any given propellant, velocity obtained in a 24 or 26" barrel is likely unattainable, safely, out of a 20" barrel. Be carefull.

Someone mentioned the mil surplus WC846 powder and I have used it for a number of years and it works very well indeed in either the 223 or 308. It is suggested that you follow the load data as though you were loading BLC2 powder with slight reduction. Flows like water in the powder thrower and seems to provide very good accuracy. You can also buy it for about 65.00 for an 8 lb jug. Negatives? I believe it is a little dirty compared to Varget, RE15,etc., but I don't mind cleaning the rifle
