Off the list I would choose the Glock 17.

Given any choice, I would choose a CZ75

Glock 17 - I like my 1911 but less capacity, a touch more jam prone.

Modern 9mm ammo is just fine.

While I never hope to go to war, the selection of sidearm depends on a lot of circumstances. For instance, on what sort of terrain and in what sort of weather will this war be fought? What sort of enemy combatants will you be facing and what gear might they have?

For very general purposes, I think the loose consensus on .45acp is wise. I prefer the FNX to a 1911, though I haven't seen it tested in all sorts of weather conditions.

SEALS-P226 and P239 in 9mm
US military as a whole-beretta 92 9mm
Marine expeditionary force-1911 .45
Air Marshal P229 and P239 357 SIG
Coast Guard P229 .40
British military-Glock 17 9mm
And on .....

You could pretty much pick any gun, in any decent caliber by any of the big boys and trust that its been tested and proven. I would take any of the above and be happy.

IMHO...Sig Sauer SAS Gen 2 chambered in .45ACP....using 185gr +p JHP......That will stop them "DEAD" in their tracks......! Today there is TOO much emphasis on Picatinny/Weaver rail systems...Anyone can put a laser on a target. Not everyone has a clear grasp of basic firearm control. Sight Alignment, Sight Picture, Trigger Control, Breathing, Stance, AND MOST IMPORTANT...GREY MATTER WHEN IT COUNTS! GET BACK TO BASICS!!!!!!REMEMBER GUN CONTROL MEANS......HITTING YOUR TARGET EVERY TIME......!

Once you're in your first firefight you'll figure out real quick that you really want some kind of assault rifle or battle rifle with the extra weight in ammo rather than any handgun you can think of. If someone makes you take a handgun, take the lightest and smallest one they'll let you carry.

If you have to go to war a sidearm is totally irrelevant. Doesn't really matter what you carry, it's just a "feel-good" item and won't make any difference at all if you're reduced to that level.

Pretty much anything that's belt fed. You got no business going into battle with a handgun. Hand gun to a soldier is a backup.

If I'm going into combat, I'm going to spend a whole lot more concern and worry on the primary longarm I'm taking than the sidearm.

Agreed. I'd also rather have extra rifle ammo & mags, more batteries for the radio, etc.

For me, the handgun would have be something like an airweight enclosed hammer or hammerless S&W J Frame.

Well, the OP was about a handgun choice. So I wonder if the current service folk would rather carry a Glock 26 than a M-9?

You see pictures of plenty of service folks with a M-4 and the M-9.
