OK just for fun

I have more handguns than I deserve...and
The wife is right when she says that I shouldn't buy any more....but...

I want to experience the "magnum" experience.

I DO have a Ruger Security Six in .357 Mag
and
Ruger Blackhawks in both 357 Mag and .45 Colt

Both STURDY Pieces!

I am looking for suggestions on loads that would be appropiate for either of those handguns that would "give me the experience"

that is...... a HEAVY load.

Obviously I do reload (why else would I be looking here)

I favor (have on hand) Hodgdon Clays, Titegroup, and Power Pistol.

and can buy a small quantity of just about any bullet that might be suggested.( Currently on hand I only have Hard Cast Lead in those calibers )

I can also get another Powder if it is required.

I'm open to suggestions............

Where should I go ?????

First place I'd start is looking in 2, 3 or 4 of my reloading manuals. Find a load that looks good and try it..

The first 2 powders you listed are too much on the fast side to give you an industrial strength load. Power Pistol is almost there, but it's still on the fast side. For a slower powder, I would suggest H110, W296 or Alliant 2400.

Now for your .357 Magnums, you'll need a medium weight bullet for a better effect something like a 125 gr. Type won't matter all that much, TMJ, JHP, etc. Since you're trying to push the envelope, I would not use your lead bullets for the following loads.

20.0 gr of either H110 or W296 will be a good show stopper as will 17.5 gr. of 2400.

If you want to stick with Power Pistol, 10.5 gr. should do the trick.

Speer #9 is the source for hot .45 Colt loads. My cast bullets work for me, but I dunno nothing about yours. I can assure you that top Ruger loads with a 250 grain bullet will give you a magnum experience.

The .45 colt is your best bet.The .45 colt using the Ruger Blackhawk ONLY you can take it up to almost .44 mag levels. There is a separate list for the .45 colt using the Ruger blackhawk BUT ONLY THE BLACKHAWK.A S&W would come apart at those pressures

I used 14.7 gr. of 2400 w/ 160 gr. JSP (Speer). After a dozen rounds through my 686 my hand had a nice tingle. For a little less "tingle" and a good show, 17.7 of the 2400 w/125 gr JHP. Nice groups from same gun. Even at 100 yards.
