comparison of muzzle flash----more=better

Does anyone know where I can find information on the types of powder and how much muzzle flash there is in XXX pistol? I am thinking of reloading for my .357 magnum or a .44 mag or even my contender hand cannon in .30-06. I would like to find some recommended powder for these not really for speed but for 'show'. I would like to have them rival an m44 7.62x54r in muzzle flash.

Muzzle Flash

The reason you get muzzle flash is,the powder is so slow burning that it is not all burnt before the projectile exits the barrel. SOOO if you want muzzle flash find a very slow powder for the calibur you are loading and go from there. But always be safe rather than cute.....Jim

For the .357 and .44 mags (depending upon bullet weight used) Alliant Power Pistol can give a spectacular light show.

For 30-06, I don't have any idea.

Dunno about 3006, but out of a short barrel, just about anything will give a big flash!

for .357 and .44 H110 gives a very nice fireball. I call it my Crowd Pleasing Powder.

Second on the H110, it will throw a good size flame out of my 4" Model 66. You should see it from on of those Scandium J-frames, I hear it was pretty cool, but I was flinching so bad after the first shot that I couldn't keep my eyes open.

Muzzle flash isn't just a factor of unburned powder.

It's also a factor of incandescence -- the superheated and pressurized gas is actually glowing.

If you want flash, Blue Dot is always good for flash.

Mike's right. The brightest portion of the fireball is a short-lived plasma of extremely hot ionized gas.

Now, if you want a real flash from a 30-06 use a light weight .308 bullet (such as 125 gr.) with 49.0 grains of AA 2230. This is a safe load with a 125 gr. bullet or lighter (don't go heavier) and it gives a huge fireball even out of a 22" rifle. It's got to be even better out of a Contender.

I just can't, for the life of me, understand why an adult would desire a lot of muzzle flash.

Bluedot will give a nice flash in 357 and it's a great 357 powder to boot.

Zeke, I dunno, might be from playing with M-80's as a kid.

I know I sure don't like a big flash when I'm shooting a HP match.

Blue dot gives the biggest flash I've seen in 357.

Mal H has it right...

Light bullet - slow powder.

Many years ago in my mis-spent youth, I loaded up some 'celebration blanks' for New Year's Eve. A small wax plug over 20 grains of 2400.

Made a good loud noise and, in the dark, about four feet of orange flame.

Exactly!

Heck, fun with firearms comes in all varieties of activities as long as safety is the first and foremost factor.

I agree, Bluedot in 357 is very flashy, also in 9mm. IMHO, my 22-250 Striker pocket rifle is unbeatable for flash/blast. Friends tell me about 8 foot fireball when loaded with H380. I know it lights up the night!!

Well, for pistol flash my vote is for W-296, and that's why I won't use it anymore. W-296 is very comparable to H-110; some people say these two powders are made in the same factory, the only difference is the label.

That's funny; I like Blue Dot and have never thought it flashed like 296, but I know my Blue Dot is old.

For lots of flash in rifle cartridges, use just about any ball powder that is compatible with the cartridge and the weight of bullet used. I my limited experience, just about any ball powder in any rifle caliber will give more flash than a comparable extruded, flake, or cut-sheet powder. The reason those Russian rifle rounds flash so much is because they are charged with ball powder.
