Is this madness or benign given the goal?

Disclaimer: this is not my idea, nor is it my intention!!

I know some guys who run a range and also reload.

They like to give their customers a good experience and they seem perfectly professional in their management of the site and handling of guns!

They have some big-bore Ruger (IIRR) revolvers there for some of the package deals that tourists often enjoy and one of them mentioned the possibility of getting the max recoil out of one of these revolvers by sticking two bullets into a given case, essentially making, say, a 600gr cartridge out of 2 x 300gr bullets or a 800gr out of 400gr bullets.

I understand that this would have little use for target practice and accuracy, but imagine you're a tourist wanting to know what a massively recoil-heavy revolver feels like, then I guess this would deliver, but it just sounds hazardous!!

Is it??
Were they pulling my leg?
Am I just gullible? (He did say it with a proper poker-face)

Do you mean case capacity left for powder?

Right. Stack two bullets next to your brass. .44 Brass is 1.285 inches I believe and a 300 grain WFN is around .85 inches so you have about 1.7 inches for the bullets and only about 1.3 inches of brass.

Actually, these were .454 Casull or S&W 500, IIRR.

It's been a while but I'm certain they weren't talking .44s.

It's a really bad plan...../ to deviate in the grain of a bullet beyond what is published in a reloading recipe....

If you have a recipe for a 240gr bullet ....and you all of a sudden increase it to a 480 grain bullet ...you'll have to push that bullet deeper into the case...causing what is almost certainly a significant increase in pressure.../ maybe dangerously so ....

What are they going to do - if one of the "tourists" loses a finger ..or an eye...?? If its one of my grandkids...a guy like me, might go after them for $5 Million ...and assert they were grossly negligent - even if they had a signed waiver..../ now maybe the legal issues are different in this area ..maybe not...but even if its only "reputation" that is damaged...there goes his tourist business....
------------------
a way better option.....say in .44 mag....in my view...

a. buy a S&W model 629, Trail Boss, in a 3" - and if you find an RSR made gun it'll be ported....it'll give you a lot of recoil with a traditional 240 gr bullet.../ then have a 4" gun ...and a 6" gun ...and an 8 3/8" barrel gun ...with the same load. They'll have fun with it...

At my local range there was a group of French businessmen visiting my area...they were at our local range renting guns / having a good time ( mostly with .22's and a 9mm ) ......and that particular day I had a mod 629 3" .44 mag....a mod 27 4" .357 mag ...and a single action Freedom Arms revolver in .357 mag.... / they were hanging around my lane, being curious, so I showed them my guns - they took some photos - and I ended up letting each of them put a few rounds thru each of my guns - they had a new experience / didn't cost them anything .../ it was fun for me to introduce someone to a different aspect of this hobby with guns that my local range did not have for rent ....and I even got a nice email thank you from them a couple of weeks later when they went home.

I think an approach like that ...for "Tourtists" is a way better plan...on handguns, or rifles, or shotguns...or any firearms for that matter..../ and way safer.

I'd be inclined to agree with you, BigJimP!

I know I wouldn't do it, but I wouldn't put it beyond some people: it's just that these seem pretty clued up and reasonable folk.

I do remember thinking "woaw, there buddy!!" when I heard that but the more I think about it, I'm pretty sure they must have been pulling my leg, or it was something lost in translation. Particularly, if they were just talking about an "imagine if..." type scenario.

There are many other legitimate ways to get the big bore, brutal recoil experience than to use dangerous reloads. While doubling up two light bullets to replace a single heavy projectile may work, it certainly won't be any different than the loading of a single heavy projectile weighing the same using the same amount of powder. .454s and 500 S&Ws have brutal enough recoil in SAAMI spec'd loads, one does not have to go above and beyond them.

There are guns that they could buy ...like Freedom Arms single action revolvers in .454 Casull, .475 Linbaugh or .500 Wyoming Express...and even in a heavy gun like the Freedom Arms large frame, 5 shot, there is a fair amount of recoil when you get up there into that .475 Linbaugh or the .500 Wyoming Express....

of course you can buy Freedom Arms revolvers in .357 mag and .44 mag as well...and custom barrel lengths....but they're commonly available in 4 3/4" barrels up to 10"....( they're primarily designed as Hunting guns...but I like them for target practice too ) ....and for your Tourist buddies ...its not a gun you will probably ever find for rent in most ranges....

It's possible, but not advisable (especially with jacketed bullets).
