Situation Xtreme

Not really sure where this thread belongs, so mod feel free to move it

Ok, Here's a hypothetical situation i think would be fun to discuss:
The whole world has just suffered a nuclear war, and only a few countries have survived. The countries that survived are all trying to gain world power now, and are engaging in brutal wars. (No nukes or missles, they were destroyed during the war) You are the leader of the New United States of America (N.U.S.A.) Amazingly every firearm in existence has been preserved. It is now up to you to equip your military for war. So here is the question: What weapons do you give to your soldiers? There are no official divisions such as the navy, marines, etc. only footsoldiers and elite footsoldiers. Remember, FIREARMS ONLY. NO EQUIPMENT. NO BUDGET.
YOU WILL BE GOING UP AGAINST TRAINED SOLDIERS THAT MAY HAVE BODY ARMOR.
Here's an example of what I would do:

Basic infantry
Assault: Kalashnikov AK-47 (7.62mm NATO FMJ)
Sniping: Heckler & Koch PSG-1 (7.62mm NATO FMJ)
Sidearm (for both):HK USP Compact (.45 ACP JHP)

Elite infantry:
Assault: M4A1 (5.56mm FMJ)
Sniping: Armalite AR-50 (.50 BMG FMJ)
Sidearm (for both): Ruger GP-100 (.357 Magnum, FMJ)

thats my pick- lets see what u come up with

Im bad at these games

OK, so postapocalyptic world. Check.

Are we just going to fiat that we can find enough of the same firearm (in a timely manner, remember, there is a war coming) to re-outfit our entire military?

The scale does not help. As the leader of a nation, you need to find thousands of HK USP's. That's not going to just _happen_. If you are more of a warlord, finding 5 may be difficult enough in your small town.

It would make more sense to instead issue whatever you have around. Maybe standardize on a caliber if you can, depending on availability (I assume ammo factories are still running..?). But shifting the remaining US military from M16 to AK would never work. You couldnt find enough of them, and your existing supplies of weaponry would be useless. Not to mention ammo and retraining.

Remember, this is postapocalyptic. Industrial base of nation has been destroyed. No factories to crunch out weaponry. No trade with China, or Russia to purchase large supplies (they dont have them, either). In fact, it may be hard enough to round up all the available ones within the country, what with the civil wars and nuclear mutants.

Maybe we should stick to fighting zombies.

CC

PS - sorry, in a really cynical mood today

Lets say that the radiation has made it impossible to use long guns and a global block war erupts with handguns only.

Every soldier will get a Glock 21 .45 ACP , and the following specialized weapons

Footsoldiers - S&W 686P .357 Magnum

Snipers - Scoped Ruger Super Redhawk .44 Magnum

Elite Soldiers - Beretta Auto-9 (RoboCop's Sidearm)
