British Transitional Pepperbox revolver how to load

Just came across this marvelous firearm on the internet.. Do any of you know how one would load such a little beastie???

I would reckon you load it like a leverless Wells Fargo.

I've heard somewhere that when shooting a pepperbox, the only safe place is standing in front of whatever target you're aiming at. I believe they were prone to chainfires.

would imagine the little pin under the barrel come out and the barrel & cylinder are removed.... But that is just a SWAG...

For some reason the lines on that gun are very elegant

I think your right about the pin, that what it looked like to me. bout the same as my Wells Fargo. Chain fire, don't see why they would be more prone, hell the nipples (one school of thought in chainfire theory) are offset. I wouldn't think they would be any more , or any less prone to them than any other revolver.

I can't back it up, just something I heard that may just have been someones personal opinion.

In the reading I've done about them, chainfires are breifly mentioned but in the same context as we see for our more familiar colt and remington replicas. You're probably right about them not being any more or less prone than any other BP gun we shoot.

He was talking about a multiple barreled gun. I'm not sure the one in the pic is a pepperbox since it has one barrel. It looks like it's double action - pull the trigger and it cocks then fires the round.

According to that article, it looks like the transitional revolvers were also prone to chainfires.

hmmm...in the case of a multi barrelled version, a chainfire might even be desirable. A hail of lead at close range!

I too do not see a classic Pepperbox, rather an early concept of a revolver. ..

NOW, If you look at the rear boss or breach end of the barrel, you will notice a cut-out of entrance ramp that would allow you to load both powder and ball, much like the standard C&B revolvers. What is missing here, is the loading lever or rod. You will also notice that the cylinder is short. What I suspect they did, was load a light powder charge and just pushed the ball in, until it was flush or cleared the barrel. This could be done with just about and flat surface. Not much room for a short start. ....

I also find the cap loading access, to favor a right hand shooter. ....
