What the word on the new gun my grandfather gave me?

So my grandfather gave me a almost brand spankin new looking remington sportsman 48 that he used many years ago. it's like in brand new shape, 12 gauge, semi auto, holds like 3 or 4 rounds. Any word on it? good/bad? worth much? just curious to know. Thanks guys

The Model 48 was Remington's first post-WWII auto shotgun.
It was made from 1949 to 1959 with 275,000 produced.

These were excellent guns, and were well made.
Price for one in excellent condition should run around $400.00

My Grandpa gave me a Model 48 in 20Ga when I was in H.S. That was almost 25 years, and it has performed flawlessly. The last time I used it was 7:00 am this morning. Unfortunately it was overcast and the doves weren't flying.

You've got a wonderful shotgun that will give many years of excellent performance.

my step father had a 11-48 in 410 and it sure was fun to shoot

I started hunting with my Dad when I was 10 yrs old...(1950). That is the only shotgun I've ever seen him use. Quail, rabbit, dove, squirrel, phesant, deer with slugs. Truly a one gun man. The only thing I never saw him hunt is ducks...I don't think hes ever been waterfowling. You'll love that gun but might better stay away from steel shot. enjoy!

Those are very nice guns! But the steel construction on that gun is not what is being made today. Check to see what choke the barrel has. If it is a full choke, you could ruin the barrel. If it is a modified choke it may still become damaged. An improved cylinder is the optimum choke for a older gun and the use of steel shot. Or another option is to have removable choke tubes milled into the barrels like the newer guns.
