Some pictures for any of you trying to figure out what Sam and I are talking about in regards to Benet primed ammo...

The first one is a .45 S&W on the left, with a .45-70 round on the right.

Both date, as best I can determine, to about 1880.

Both cases are copper, and you can see the crimp, or cannelure (sp?) just up from the rim near the case head that holds the Benet cup in place.

The primer was either inserted as part of the cup, or inserted with the cup then inserted after it (both were experimented with, I don't know which type these would be) and then the case cannelured to hold the internal cup in place.

The cup, in essence, served as the anvil for the center-fire system.

In this picture you see the case heads, both looking as if they are rimfire cases.

The .45 S&W is on the left again, the .45-70 on the right.

You put garlic on that .45 S&W, didn't you Mike?

Thanks Mike. I forgot about the retaining canallure just forward of the rim bein the major clue as to whether one is rimfire or internal primed centerfire.

Good pics
