Actual capacity of SIG (Mec-Gar) P226 .40 mags?
I searched, but could only find one thread on this, from 2008 or so. That post mentioned "14+1" magazines for .40 S&W/.357 SIG. I've seen numerous mentions of 12-round, 13-round, and 15-round Mec-Gar mags, and I have six 12's and two 15's. I think four of the 12's came with my P226 DAK when I bought it, and I got a couple more with the "Anti-Friction Coating" afterward. I only acquired the 15's in the last month or so, and they were big buck$.
The lowest witness hole on my flush-fit ones says 12, but are they really 13-rounders? I haven't tried loading one past 12, and I s'pose it could be a dumb idea to try that. The Mec-Gar site lists Model MGP2264013, which says "Increased capacity to 13-rounds while remaining flush-fit." In the photo on the site, it looks to have a different base from the ones I have already. <http://www.mec-gar.com/Magazines/Sig-Sauer/MGP2264013> The other type is the MGP2264015, which adds a "Plus-2 Adapter" (also available separately, if you can get any) to the basic mag. The bottom witness hole on the ones I have says 13. They're about 5/8" longer than the other type. <http://www.mec-gar.com/Magazines/Sig-Sauer/MGP2264015> Are there actually two different kinds of flush-fit .40/.357 mags for the P226? Thanks for any clue-ins. |

Since no one else has responded yet, I'll jump in and put out my speculation based on my experience with 9mm P228 and P226 mags since I don't own a .40 P226. I suspect that the differences in mag capacity is based on whether they are Sig-branded mags or ones with the Mec-Gar name on them. I have Sig-branded factory P228 mags made by Mec-Gar with a 13rd capacity and some of the equivalent Mec-Gar branded ones that have a different follower and spring that increases the capacity to 15rds.
I think that is what is probably what is going on with the .40 P226 mags. The standard Sig factory .40 P226 mag is a 12 rounder. I suspect the 13rd mag in your first link is the M-G branded version of that Sig-branded mag with a slight modification - lower profile follower?, shorter mag spring?, thicker mag base? - I don't know. The 15 round mag in your second link appears to be the the 13rd M-G mag with a +2 adapter base. Last edited by wgsigs; March 20, 2013 at 09:25 AM. Glad I didn't say "no 9mm owners need reply," because I think you're right. (Just kidding, about everything except the "you're right" part. My S&W 3913 is my second 9mm in 40+ years of gun ownership, and I sometimes wish I hadn't sold my 39-2 back in '74.)
The +2 Adapter fits eight (but not all) different Mec-Gar mags, including the MGP22618, making those into MGP22620's. I think I've seen a mention somewhere of 14-round .40 mags, but I'm not gonna confuse the issue even further with that. I guess my main question from this is if the "12's" are really "13's," and if I could eventually convert the "low-cap" mags I have now to 15-rounders. I wouldn't feel too bad if they maxed out at 14, but I'd like both a bunch of mags and a bunch of rounds per mag for my SHTF Kit. Thanks for your input. |
