Double check my 40S&W Longshot load please ?
I am loading a 40 S&W 180gr FMJ bullet with Longshot.
It is not in my manual. I only have the reloading information off the Hodgdon online site. It lists 6.5gr starting, 8.0gr max. I plan on loading at 7.0 and 7.2 for my first two small batches. Does this sit well with information or notes you might have on hand ? Any idea why the starting load was listed so low ? I would have expected 7.2 to 8.0 instead of 6.5 to 8.0 Thank you in advance. |

I double checked the online manual - and I agree, that is what it says.....
I'd wait and see if anyone responds that has another manaul - and can confirm the same info. My hard bound load manuals are at home - so I can't do that for you this afternoon. That does seem like a lot of variance on that load to me as well. But Longshot is one of the slower burning powders in the Hodgdon lineup of powders. The only place I use Longshot is in a couple of loads for 20ga and 28ga shotshells - I don't have any experience with it in pistol calibers. ( for the .40 S&W, I really like TiteGroup ). If you really want to try Longshot, I think I'd do some test loads ( like 4 shells, at about 17.2 grains - and see how dirty they are - because I think you might find them real dirty and not want to fuss with Longshot in that caliber - but just a guess. |
