22-250 varmints?

would a 22-250 be to powerful for varmint like rabbit and grey squirls?

Depends upon how far you want to scatter the pieces.

I'd say it was way too much rifle.
By the way, most states consider cottontails and tree squirrels to be small game not varmints.

The .22-250 (and the Swift) are intended for long distance varminting on prairie dogs, jackrabbits, feral domestic pets and coyotes. Mostly.

Since cottontails and gray squirrels are considered eatin'-meat--small game, as noted--it's best to consider the plain old .22 rimfire so as not to destroy the little critters.

Some states require hunting licenses for squirrels, and there may well be seasons. Also, many states have laws about wasting game meat.

I swear this is not BS but years ago before the Atchafalaya Basin became "people flooded" {that's a damn shame too} there were 5 or 6 of us that used to hunt squirrels with .22 centerfires.............22-250 included (mine for one). The trick was with the cat squirrels was to find a feeding tree and let them come to you. During feeding times every 10 to 15 minutes one would be coming. Then the bigger trick was to hit him in the head. Take my word for it, there were not many misses of the head..............anyone who blew one up had to buy beer for the rest! That was a big incentive. Sad to say now there are too many folks around for that plus the state outlawed everything bigger than a ,22 rimfire for small game.

Too much gun unless you are trying to shoot them at 300 yards or so. A .22 would do the trick and be alot cheaper to shoot.
