Primer dent

I am running a Lee Loadmaster. Once fired 9mm auila brass tumbled and sent through the chute. In order to get the primer .002-.004 below the surface I had to adjust a couple of turns. I pulled a few cases in between and noticed that after de-priming there is a fair amount of crud left in the bottom of pocket. Below are a couple picks of dented CCI primers. I am thinking I may have to clean the pockets before priming. I only have a few hundred CCi primers and then 3k of the Tulla primers which I undersatnd to be softer. I dont want to have them going off in the press. Any input?

A Q-tip soaked in acetone should clean out most of the junk, and then blow it out with a can of compressed air.

What does your priming post pin look like? Is there any debris getting between the priming post pin and the primer?

Probably something on the primer post. I've seen dents like that cause caused by a powder flake stuck to it.

+another recommendation that you check your primer seating post.

I have a slight imperfection on my priming rod which leaves a dent on my primers.

I use both CCI and Tula small pistol primers. My experience is the Tula is harder to seat, not softer. Tula ignition seems to be "softer" than CCI, but the primer cup is harder to seat.

Could have been some powder on the post but its clean now. How about seating to deep or to much pressure?

No, that dent was caused by trash on the seating post as mentioned above. It really doesn't hurt anything except your pride when you show off your work.

Looking at the top pic which is much clearer I looks as if that primer is indeed seated rather deep and is that an outward dimple in the middle of that primer cuz if it is I think it may be the cup pressed against the anvil ??? Hard to tell but looking with a magnifying glass at the pic things dont look right.

Both pics are the same case and primer. It is a concave ding. I have to get a can of air to keep on the bench to blow things out. The odd dent seems to be a combination of the primers not starting straight and debris.

Do all the cases that have this also have what looks like a double crimp ring in the flash hole? What is that ring in a ring?

David R. I didnt notice that until you mentioned it. I think it may be the primer plunger coming up to far and denting the case. I am going to run one through without the primer to see. I was having trouble getting the primers below the surface so I adjusted the primer plunger until I got them below the surface. Maybe I went to far.
