First Coyote of 2010 (About Time!)

Well it's been a slow year for predators this year. I had a dry spell January thru March, and hung up the calls until August. I got a bobcat in early August but haven't been out as much as I would have liked to this year. I've seen a bunch of coyotes and put my buddies on a few but today I finally shot one for myself.

My wife's family was in town for their annual Christmas party so I took two of my brothers-in-law to try and find some predators. Third stand of the morning about 5 minutes in this guy came running in. We were callin' the thick stuff but he came in so that I had plenty of time to set up and was very ready when he popped out of a ditch at about 15 yards. He was trotting right to me and I let him have a chest/neck/face full of 3" #4 buckshot. HAMMERED him, as you might imagine! I forgot my camera so this was taken from my brother-in-law's phone:

The foxes in our area are bigger than that.

Yeah our desert dogs are generally not very big. This was a young one but an average dog isn't all that much bigger.

Oh man calling them in is a blast. Totally addicting. I remember my first called coyote, it changed something inside me. Predator calling has become almost as fun as big game hunting for me (except the payoff in meat isn't there). It combines all the excitement of big game with a year-round season and multiple bag limit. I rarely hunt birds anymore, just not nearly as exciting. Although I admit when there are a lot of birds, they are a lot of fun too. Keep at it, you get better and better at it as you go. Any pics?

Mine was actually called in by Dog! I have a Submissive howler call and have gotten a few reply's but none in close enough yet! It was something knowing that it would scat-out at any moment.

Yeah, the desert coyotes out here are slightly smaller than that
