Star used to make a model B called the Starlite.
Not sure if they still offer something like it or not.

Compact 9mm Stars are interesting pistols but they aren't Commanders in the strict and technical sense. There are a number of design differences, notably a pivoting rather than sliding trigger, no grip safety, and an external extractor. Furthermore, although they look superficially identical in most photos, B-series 9mm pistols are scaled down slightly from a M1911. BTW the Star model you're discussing is the BKS, which was sold with and without the "Starlite" monikor. The BKM is basically the same pistol but without a mag disconnect. The BM is a BKM with a steel frame.

STI offers a couple of their hi-capacity models close to the size you're looking for. The 4.2" Tactical and the 4" VIP are both offered in 9 mm with an aluminum alloy frame as a no charge option. (I have the Tactical in .40 cal with the aluminum frame.) In single stack I think the only 1911 with an alloy frame is the Escort and its closer to an Officer size with a 3.2" barrel.

Dan Wesson in the $1500 range. Better quality than any of the other factory guns. Although Fusion will build you a custom for about that, too, though I hear spotty things about them sometimes.

colt doesn't offer a commander in 9mm.
the 2 mentioned above are officer models. DW is the only other game really but theirs are bob tailed if that matters. you can step up to wilson or nighthawk but then you are shelling out 2.5k. vs that 1400 the dw is. which is a step up from the kimber at 1100 I think. |

I also own a DW Guardian and love it. Everything you want in a 9mm alloy commander and nothing you don't.
