new .45 reloader

New to .45 reloading. Have been reloading for 40 years, shotgun, rifle, and pistol (about 50,000)
Thot maybe someone could bounce some pet loads, or handy tips.
Have 1000 once fired brass,185 gr Remington JHP and most types of Alliant powders.

For range fun and plinkin I've found no better powder that WST. Scary accurate and soft shootin.

If you want those 185 grainers to scream (1100+ fps) give Ramshot Silhouette at try.

I have good results with Bullseye & Unique. I use primarily 230 gr cast and plated, so my loads will not help you with your 185s.

I started with W-231 seven years ago and use it exclusively for all rounds except 357 Mag. (six lbs on hand today). Yes I use it alot.

I went to 230 grain 45 ACP for the extra lead out the barrel, not sure I would want to try the 185's. Both my 45 pistols are timed and tuned for the 230 grain bullet, I don't think I want to re-time them, but anything is possible.

Let use know how they work out.

Good Shooting

Pet loads:

225 gr LRN 5.5 gr WW-231
225 gr LRN 6.5 gr Unique
225 gr LRN 5.0 Bullseye

These loads should be reduced and worked up in your gun. Fed 150 LP Primers for all.

Handy Tips:

Do not buy a cartridge case gauge. Use your barrel outside of the gun.
45 LOVES cast boolits. Buy a mould or bulk cast and have more fun.
Size cast boolits to .452
Taper crimp the case mouth .469-.471

For my Colt Gold Cup I use a 210 grain lead semi-wadcutter and 3.5 grins of Bulleye powder. I'm not sure of the velocity; however it is accurate. I can keep most of my shots in the ten ring on a standard bullseye target.

My standard plinking load for .45 Auto is a 200 grain SWC and 5.5 grains of Bullseye. It is a little hotter than many use for plinking, but it functions well in both of my 1911's and in my older brothers, without too much recoil.

I have used W231 (or HP-38), some Accurate Arms powders, Titegroup, and Trailboss as well, but usually stick with the Bullseye.

My favorite load is 7.0gr of Unique under a 200 Hard Lead SWC. Can hold in the black of an NRA target at 50ft and stay in the X from a rest.

WLP's and 5.5 WW231 pushing my cast 200gr SWC's. Nice target load and it functions my carry guns. Cheap and not too dirty.
