22 LR scope

i just bought a Savage Arms Mark II 22LR and the scope on it already broke and i only took it shooting once. Im needing to get a new one but im not wanting to spend more than about $70. any advice. I just need one for squirrel hunting and recreational shooting. Any advice?

Did the scope come as a package with the rifle. Are the scopes under warranty from Savage?

What power are you looking into? I'd look at Bushnell for inexpensive but very functional scopes.

Simmons Mag .22 good for the money.

For a 4x fixed power, I just mounted one of these to my dad's old Marlin bolt-action .22 and love it. For squirell hunting you don't really need much more magnification.

I have been thinking about getting a scope for my new 22 rifle as well. I got a mossberg 702 plinkster and have not shot it yet, but I will on wednesday!

I will be going to get a rifle case as well as the scope. I will only be using the gun for recreational shooting. If the world ends, I will be using it to hunt mutated squirrels and rabbits for food.

I am in the process of sending my Simmons Mag 22 back to the factory because the elevation adjustment does not work.

I have a Bushnell Banner 4-12 AO that's pretty good. About $85 at the URL below. Mine seems to be a very good scope for the money. (Non-rimfire scopes without AO will give you parallax problems under 100 yards.)

All mine carry used 4x Leupold Compacts - the Gold Standard - none which I paid over $75 for.

All Leupolds have a lifetime warranty - on the scope, not the owner - which I've never had occassion to use.

Look around, ask clerks.

My T/C .22 lr auto wears a 2x7x32 Leupold VX-1 I picked up used on Gunbroker for about $75 including the shipping. Since they have a lifetime warranty, I didn't worry about the used part, but it has worked perfectly since I purchased it.

The only thing I don't like about it is the windage & elevation adjustments which don't have "clicks". It was a little tricky to get zeroed the first time but after once, it has held zero for almost 2 years now.

Polar Bear Football--Wanting an inexpensive 'scope for a .22, I'd go to a gun show and look at used 'scopes. For ~ $70 in my area there'd be Weavers, Bushnells, and Leupolds, and the like to look at.

Used is OK with a 'scope: Shake it; it shouldn't rattle. Look through it; it should focus, and the cross-hairs should be clear. Who cares if it has a scratch or 2 in the exterior finish? BTW, used rings work just fine too.

I find that it's even more true than usual with optics: You get what you pay for. Now, with a .22, the 'scope isn't going to fail you when The Jordan Buck steps into view, but even so, it'd be mighty inconvenient if it failed in the middle of a good squirrel hunt, say, about 5 miles into the woods.

So, maybe go "inexpensive," if you must, but don't go "cheap."

For inexpensive, I would look at the Simmons line. I prefer the Weaver rimfire series, but they cost a bit more. Weaver and Simmons are made by the same company and there is a warranty.

I think you can get by with an inexpensive scope as long as you do not plan on adjusting it frequently. If you intend to do that, I would go with something with target turrets on it.

+1 on the 4x32 Nikon Prostaff. Have had one on my model 39 Marlin and it's held zero since day one, and I have probably put 6,000 rds through that gun, just in the last two yrs.

Bad luck with newer Simmons. Chk for internal streaked coatings on the internal elements. had to send two back. Bought one on a friends rec to put on a cheap single shot B/A .22 rifle and ended up just ordering another Nikon!!

I bought a Savage Arms Mark II 22LR with scope from Dick's Sporting goods and the rifle was fantastic but the scope was junk. I replaced it with a 3X12 pellet rifle scope "Baraska??" and it works great for me. Got it from Midway for about $60 bucks. Have purchase another one for my .223. Very happy with my "cheap" scope.
