IPSC Gun Choice
I am really interested in IPSC and I had a few questions for anyone on this forum who might shoot in IPSC matches. The first is: what type of pistol do you use? Be specific with make and model, sights, perfered ammo... Any tips for a beginner? Any excercises that might be helpful that aren't so obvious (like target practice lol). And lastly if you answer any of my question then please let me know which competitions you were in and perhaps how good you did. Thanks a million in advance!

I shoot USPSA (simply the US "division" of IPSC) regularly and do quite well. I have only been shooting local matches but plan on moving up to bigger, regional matches. I shoot a Glock 17 that has been modified, but still fits into production class and can compete in the limited class as well. The modifications are as follows:
-4.5lb connector (this and the cruciform is polished) - Reduced power firing pin spring and recoil spring - "Dawson Precision" sights (Fiber optic front) - "AGrip" wrap around gip tape - and, of course... the "Punisher" slid cover plate cause I’m so darn cool

Thank you very much for the reply! What excites me the most is I happen to have a glock 17 but I wasn't sure if it was up to par for a practical shooting match. I have been considering a Recoil spring upgrade for a while. You went with reduced weight? Wouldn't that increase felt recoil?

Nope. The reduced weight allows the slide to move rearward easier while imparting less pressure to the grip and frame. With the heavier spring, the lower is "pushed" back into your hand harder, increasing the felt recoil.

Also, your G17 will work fine! I like my Glocks, I shoot the 17 for comp and carry a G22 at work. They are easy to use, shoot well and function flawlessly! Now, Im rapidly becoming a HUGE fan of the S&W M&P,I’ ll be picking one up soon!

Thanks. There are other options or accessories out there but most of them do just what I did here in a little different form or function. Good luck with your match. Holler if you have any questions.
