Acceptable variances in ogive/oal measurements
Don't want to wear out my welcome but hopefully this will be my last question for awhile. I just finished loading my first set of 20 cartridges for .243. I bought all new RCBS equipment plus a Davidson 2 piece ogive checker that clamps on my calipers - this one seemed easier to use than my brother-in-law's Sinclair hex type. I measured the ogive to base for all 20 cartridges and they vary 0.003" ( 2.0985"-2.1015"). The OAL varies 0.0045" ( 2.6470"-2.6515"). I can rotate the cartridge and get .0005"-.0010" variances, someone else could use my setup and get different readings as well. I would think there are probably more manufacturing variations in the plastic tip than on the metal portion of the bullet.
However, I used the same setup to measure my factory loads and those ogive measurements varied .014" for 12 shells, the OAL varied as much as .019" for the same 12. I assume my ogive variences at .003" for what I just loaded are considered ok? Thanks. |
