wisdom does come with age

over the past couple years i have been reducing the loads in my 454 casuell. I used to push my freedom arms hard. and my acuracy payed for it. this gun is hard on you off the bench when you run it hot. so i was playing this morning with a 12.5 grain load of unique behind a 300 gr xtp non mag. it was averaging 1150 fps. do you guys see any problem with hunting whitetail with this load. the recoil is real timid. and it was shooting 2" at 100. normaly i would be pushing a 300 gr xtp mag about 1800 fps and paying for every trigger pull.

Considering your 300gr has got 880ft lbs of energy @ the muzzle & 708ft lbs @ 100yds, I would think you shoudn't have any problems!

Good luck w/ your hunt!!

In my early days I cracked the cylinder on a Ruger Super Blackhawk. In the same year I cracked the reciever of a 181 Mini.

My gunsmith told me that I would seriously damage or kill myself if I continued fooling around. Being sane, I now buy guns to meet my needs instead of trying to force a cartridge into becoming another.

Is that why I can shoot better as I get older? I no longer construct my reloads to impress others over there with its big bang?

So this is wisdom? Hi there, good to meet you...

Smarter and older.

Yes. Actually that's backwards. You get older because you got smarter. Not that many old (can I say dumbasses in this forum?) idiots running around. And yes, we are less likely to do things to impress other people any more.

I don't see any problems with that at all.
You have a heavy enough bullet to cary the and the right enough of speed to carry the inertia for terminal ballistics.

After 60 years, I'm finding comfort in the 1000-1100fps range with my 357, 41, 44, and 45 revolvers. Also enjoying the ACP much more. Amazing how cervical issues impact recoil absorption.
