NRA Member numbers....

Looking down the list of our club members and their NRA member numbers, I see a lot of them starting with letters instead of numbers. Are these Life members? It's also interesting to see some that have only seven digits and the newer members with nine. Anyone out there have only five or six? Does the NRA retire a number of a deceased or dropped member? Just kinda wondering what some of the "old-timers" out there can share with us about it.

I'd be willing to bet that most NRA members here are like me ... I don't have a clue what my membership number is. I'd have to go dig it up.

I'm a Patron member and the number on my card is 8 digits (beginning with a 5), but there are 4 zeros in front of the 8.

So, that's a 12 digit number, right?

Upgraded from Life to Endowment in 1994. Just got a new member card in the mail last week, but the number is unchanged:
00001706XXXX

GoldenState, same here. Had no clue there was such a place here to give my number, and didn't even know I HAD a member number (DUHHHH). I'm a lifer, now you guys got me going for my wallet to see.......

OK, I've found it---mine is 9 digits with no letters--been a lifer for about 6 years or more now.

I didn't have the $1k to spend on a life membership last time it came up for renewal, so I don't know if it'd have changed or not. My guess, though, is that they didn't want the numbers getting too long and started incorporating letters to keep the length down.

I'm a life member, and have a 12 digit number (the first 4 being zeros).

No letters, so it's not a life member thing, and I've been a member since around 1998, life member since 2007. No number change over all tho9se years.

I would highly doubt if mumbers are re-used.. I'm thinking it would really mess with there records to try to re-issue a #

I've got a 12 digit number also (3 zeroes in front).
When I was an "Easy Pay Life Member", before my life membership vested, I had an "EPL" before my member number. They issued me a new card when I finally paid it off.

I am a Benefactor Member. My number is 12 digits starting with 4 zeros.

I did a pay out plan in the early 70s for a life membership. IIRC it was $300 and took about 2 or 3 years to pay out. I'm relatively sure that the number I had originally is not the same number I have now.

To clarify, I was referring to the list of members at our local gun club. Most of their NRA member numbers are the numerical ones that roughly show how long they have belonged to that organization. I was just wondering why there were several at random who had three letters in the first three spaces such as JKE, the most common, BPM, CJW, and others all over the alphabet. I guess I'll just have to ask them!

My Life Member card has an 8-digit number starting with a 4. I was an annual member for many years before I became a life member some years ago (I don't remember how many years).

I tend to carry a very slim wallet. Cards I don't use with regularity are in a bigger wallet, safely locked up.

As you can tell by my login, I'm also a lifer. My number is 12 digits with the first five being zeros. I started out 30 years back as a yearly member then went to a couple of five year memberships. I think they offered me a discount on the life membership right after I re-upped the second time. I think it was $400 and that was around 1995.

Had to go look for my #. I liked what I found.
8 digits, the first 4 digits are 1911

When I got my life membership they were only $150.
But I think I've recently seen offer of life membership for the same $150. Was I really reading correctly? If so it is a tremendous bargain.

My life membership cost me $100.00 (paid off in quarterly payments of $25.00)-and that was after a decade or so of paying annual membership dues!

I also took advantage of an easy pay life membership that I think was only $300. Now I'm upgrading to an easy pay Patron status.

Anyway, a partial answer to the OPs original question, my original annual membership number was different than my life membership number.

I just dug out a few old cards to see and found that my original member number was 8 characters with three letters first, then 4 numbers and one more letter at the end. When I did the Easy Pay Life plan, they added an EPL farther right on the card.

Now I have a 12 digit number with five 0s in front.

I dug out my wife's fairly new annual card and it is also 12 digits but with only three 0s in front.

So it looks like maybe the NRA is moving towards a number only system...perhaps. This is only an assumption based on observation and not verified in any way.
