45 ACP ammo in 45LC

Someone told me you can shoot 45 ACP in a 45 LC revolver. Thoughts????

With a different cylinder installed,like a Ruger Blackhawk,or any 1873 that had an extra cylinder fitted.But no, to just sliding it in.There's no shoulder to hold the .45acp in place.

Maybe.

45 ACP is not rimmed, so the extractor star would not be able to remove them. You'd need moon clips to get the brass out and I'm not sure if they'd fit in all .45 LC guns.

Factory ammo? No.

Options in lieu of ANY .45 Colt brass. You don't say where you're out of.
Several ways to make useable cases out of the ACPs. Time consuming, and access to a mill would be needed to obtain consistent headspace.

You will either have to get the revolver reamed to accept moonclips or you can get a convertible model Blackhawk .45 Colt/.45 ACP.

Is it POSSIBLE? Yes. But you can't just drop them into any old .45colt revolver like you can with .38 special in a .357. The revolver has to be specifically set up for it, either with a separate cylinder or recessed for moon clips.

Well, I think this has been answered thoroughly.

Anyway, I highly recommend one. I have a S&W 625MG in 45LC I had cut for moons so I could shoot ACPs. The ACPs are about the only rounds I fire through it now-a-days, since they're so much cheaper.

Now if only I could get my reloader set up again...

You can in a S&W Governor and it shoots well with it. It uses moon clips and partial moon clips to vary the cylinder with diffrent ammo.

There have been people who have fired .45acp from their .45 Colt Comanche single shot pistols using an O ring in the extractor groove. I wouldn't recommend trying it yourself.

How does a 45Colt head space if you remove material from the back of the cylinder? What maintains the distance between the primer and the firing pin?

You don't remove all the material.

You mill out material between the extractor star and the middle of the chambers. The area of the cylinder which was not milled still supports the rim of rimmed cases. The are that was milled supports the moon clips that support the cases. Thus headspace (the distance between the breech/firing pin and cartridge/primer) is maintained for each type of cartridge either way.

I wondered if it was a partial removal of material. Any issues with shooting a "hotter" than standard 45 Colt load in a gun modified like this? As far as supporting the case?

If your interested in the conversion, I had Mark at Pinnacle (http://www.pinnacle-guns.com/revolver.asp) do my S&W 625 45LC and now I shoot both 45acp & 45LC, I really like the conversion and have has great results with it.

Not in a solid head case. It might be an issue with a balloon head case, but such cases are almost impossible to find any more.

I know what they are, look like an over grown rimfire. Had my education on the 45 Colt 30 years ago compliments of an old 10" T/C. That bugger was nastier than any 44 mag I've fired!

You can fire .45 ACP in a .45 Colt revolver if you point the gun straight up in the air. That is not recommended as 1) there are few targets hovering in the air, 2) there are even fewer bad guys hovering in the air, and 3) what goes up really does come down.

curt, 45 AutoRim no moon clips needed, Remington used to load this (230gr. LRN). Last I looked brass is still available.

Guv, you can't use .45 Auto Rim in a revolver made for the .45 Colt, only in revolvers made to use the .45 ACP with a moon clip.
