What if I find a really nice pre-27?

Planning ahead, what would I expect to have to pay now for a 6" pre-27 in very good condition? Can we define an upper amount that, to pay more than, would be akin to madness? Note, when holding a gun that I can't stop myself from drooling over, I often look for kindly intervention...

The so-called pre 27 (actually S&W called them the .357 Magnum) are getting to be rather expensive. I would expect to pay in my area around $1500 or more for a nice 98%+ gun. More if it came with the original box and tools.

I would agree with the above. Any 5-screw "357 Magnum" is going to be over $1000 in good condition and the better the condition and more desirable the barrel length (3.5" & 5" bring premiums) the higher above 1K the price will go.

I have a 5" and have been looking for a shooter grade 3.5" for some time. Even well worn examples I've seen are priced in the $1000 to $1200 range. I'm going to keep looking but I'm not holding my breath...at my age I'll faint before I find one. (LOL)

How would the value compare to a 1959-60 model 27 No dash#(4-screw)with special ordered target hammer/trigger with a 5" barrel and box/tools etc....the gun is 99%? The original diamond target grips are beautiful and are 100%. Following are a few pictures of this revolver:

My old Mdl 27 3.5" and a Pre 29 5 screw .44 Mag. both shooters. The 3.5" Mdl. 27 has long been my favorite .357.
