.223 Varmint
Looking for pet loads in .223 for varmints. Using 50grain V-Max and 50 grain Blitz King bullets. Not sure on which powder to start with. Loaded for big guns for years but new to the smaller calibers.

My varmit load, for my NEF Ultra-Varmit, is:
45 gr Sierra softpoint Over 26gr H335 CCI 240 primer Lake City brass. It shoots sub-MOA for me, and is not too hot (3,200 fps.) I like the terminal effect of the lighter bullets on varmits.

My experience is that there's no universal "pet load" for any caliber of any rifle. You'll have to do it the old-fashioned way...start low and work your loads up, experimenting with seating depth and charges. I like H335 in .223.

Try 26 grs. pf WW748. Out of my VLS with 50 V-Max i get 3400 fps. Also very accurate 1/4" or less and this is only with the trigger pull adjusted and the rifle not really broken in yet. Bought the gun last summer and never really got to the range to work it out to any great excent.

If you shoot a lot (I just love prairie dogs!) Wideners has a surplus powder, WC844 for about $75/8lb jug. It's a ball powder that burns at about the rate of H335, and I've had great results with it in 223 with 50-55 gr bullets.

I forgot that I bought 2lbs of ww748 and 1lb of rel15 at a yard sale. Dodge, I'll try your load. Off the top of my head, isn't reloader 15 good for .223. I'm shooting a Rem 700 classic and the varmints are 'yotes, ground hogs and crows. Thank you so far. Just braggin', I made out like a bandit at that yard sale. I got 2lbs of ww296, 2lbs of ww748, 1lb of Reloader 15, 1lb IMR-4350, 2boxes 150gr ballistic tips, 1 box 150gr partitions, 1000 pcs 9mm brass, 100 pcs 30-06 brass, tumbler, media seperator, F1 chronograph, RCBS .44 mag dies, calipers, lube pad, set of shell plates, lee 9mm dies, 1000 large pistol primers, 1000 large rifle primers, 300gr .44 cal XTP bullets and lots of other things. I gave $52 for all of it. I got home and it looked like I bought a Midway catalog.
