hooded site's purpose

i think i have the right forum for this...

i've used a hooded front site on an old mosin nagent and loved it. my question is what exactly is it designed for? it seems from using it, it would be for closer, quick sighting.

It is so you get the same sight picture every time.
Under various lighting conditions you will not get glare or shadows.

than machine or hand cutting (terminology check) stippling? on the flat surfaces surrounding the sight to reduce glare.

Lighting conditions can cause variation in how the front site is centered in the rear.

Bullseye shooters smoke the front site so it is dead flat black with no reflections to improve accuracy.

Since this is not very practical on a military weapon in combat, a hood reduces the light hitting the site from the sides and produces more consistent illumination.

It also helps protect a smaller (thinner) site from damage.
