Is Universal and Universal Clays the same powder?

G'day and welcome to TFL. the short answer is NO.

Here is another related thread.
This is from the Sierra reloading manual.
Quote:
Universal Clays should not be confused with Hodgdon’s Clays, or International Clays. These three powders are different and should not be interchanged
ADI/HODGDON propellantsand Hodgen doesn't make their own powder, so I am told are a couple of other threads at TFL that you might find worth reading.

Yes. Where the confusion comes in is that Clays, Universal Clays and International Clays are all different powders.

Universal and Universal Clays is the same thing.

Sevens. Are you saying that Universal is short for Universal Clays and that Hodgdon’s Clays, and International Clays are both different?

That is what he is saying and that is what is so.

The powders were introuduced as Clays, International Clays, and Universal Clays, but reloaders had trouble understanding two words at a time so the designations have been being abbreviated to Clays, International, and Universal.

Yep.
Hodgdon made this mess. Most load data refers to them as Clays, International and Universal. But Hodgdon still writes "clays" on the actual bottles... I think?

We had a thread about this quite recently. No doubt, this was a lot of stupid confusion on the part of Hodgdon. Really ignorant to name them in this manner, because switching powders accidentally is not like dumping a little salt on your plate when you wanted pepper. It's more like taking a blood transfusion of B negative when your body was looking for some A positive.

G'day. Thanks for clearing that up for me. It's now as clear as mud!
I'll just stick to using;
ADI AS30N (= Hodgdon Clays).
ADI AS50N (= Hodgdon International).
ADI AP70N (= Hodgdon Universal).

Hay, I have just noticed that ADI makes all three of these powders and Hodgdon sells them in the USA.

Yes, ADI makes all Hodgdon's flake and extruded powders.
