So... this SIG Sauer "P226 German"...

So I'm bored at work and head to the SIG website and see this "P226 German." I'm not a walking SIG library, but I know some stuff. The slide has the same look as the old stamped P226s, and the slide is made of carbon steel instead of stainless steel like the modern version.

So does anyone know how close the "P226 German" is to the West German P226s of old in terms of design, how it is made, and quality?

Just because it is made in Germany doesn't mean it will be like the originals. They are probably using the same process as here in the states. Sounds like a marketing gimmick to me.

Over the past few years I've picked up two w.german 226's for 500ish, that were lnib. Exeter has gone insane with their pricing and between their QC problems and adolescent marketing gimmicks, I'm not interested in anything they've had a hand in. I'm still not sure that SIG Exeter and Taurus arent one and the same! I'm honestly shocked that Exeter is still in business.

The picture in Markwondi's post looks like it has an inserted breech block, just like my West German P226. It is hard to tell from the picture, but in the one view it is very suggestive.

I am a fan of the classic Sigs: 220, 226, 229, 239. I don't see how a machined slide can be worse than an stamped one with an insert for a breech block, but I am not an engineer. I bet if the West Germans made the original with a machined slide and the American ones would have been made with inserts and stamped steel, we Sig fans would have howled.

That said, I don't think Sig has had a real winner since the 239. I don't count the 1911. That was JMB's winner. I have heard the stories about QC problems and am watching closely, but my new 229s, 226s, and 239s seem to work as well as my 1983 W. German.

F/U: Just went to the website. I think it is clear that the breech block is an insert.

Sounds like someone in marketing reads the internet gun boards, saw all the whining about "old vs new", and saw an opportunity to again increase revenues.

Im sure the purists will be bitching just as loud, or even louder now.

As silly as some of their stuff seems to be sometimes, at least they appear to be listening to what their customers want. Of course, according to some, if they make more money doing so, they are just even bigger whores and taking more advantage of us.

And it only comes in 9mm, the only caliber I would own a 226 in. If this gun is what it says it is, I see a 226 in my future.

lol though I need a P220. Yes need. I'm infatuated with my P226 E2 though. I feel like crying. Haven't shot it in a month.
