odd-ity

take a look at this thread that i started:
http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/...threadid=73065

in the L&P forum it is listed as being started by Frank Sottile and only having 5 responses...

database problem or "feature"?

Weird...All I can see to explain anything is that there are five replies after Frank's. Definately a first for me.

I just figured it out...

dZ posted a thread entitled, "Arms Makers to Adopt Regulations (Ruger signs UN document" on 7/11 at 9:31 pm.

Frank Sottile posted a duplicate thread entitled, "Gun Makers Compromise & Sign Pact With UN" on 7/12 at 4:44 pm.

The new vBulletin software allows staff to merge two threads instead of just locking the duplicate. This is nice if the duplicate has a number of good responses. dZ's thread was merged with the thread by Frank Sottile on 7/12 at 8:42 pm.

The problem is that the merger got mixed up with the mergee. ( Too technical, I know )

dZ's thread got merged into Frank's thread, instead of the other way around. (Moderator mistake .. Hey, we're human) The software automatically shuffles the threads together according to posting time/date, so dZ's post is at the top; but the software was told that Frank's thread was the one to keep, so the thread ID of his is the one that was kept, and he is shown as the originator of the thread.

When the software counts the responses to the thread, it just counts the ones after the thread originator. That's why it shows 5 responses, yet it is two pages long!

I know of a way to fix it, but I'd like to leave it as it is for the edification of the staff. I certainly learned a lot this morning.

I did that...sorry. Halfway through the merge your thread disappeared and I thought I had somehow deleted it. When I finally got it to appear with the merge, it was the wrong thread, of course, but all the posts were still there so I changed the title to yours and emailed you and Frank. I got an answer from Frank, and I didn't get a bounce from you so I assumed you got the email and just had no comment. Could be my email is the problem.
Sorry again.

The reindex fixed it.
Thanks for the heads up.
