M77 rebarrel
I was kicking around the idea of rebarreling my M77,22-250 to a match barreled .308 Win.Would the .308 round fit in the action? Is the action strong enough to handle the higher powered rd.?Who makes barrels for M77's?Am I wasting my time on a build like this?

Your bolt face and extractor won't work work the the larger and rebated rim of the .308. A 250-3000 or 250 Savage will work and is a sweet little round, but I highly doubt that you are moving into that direction since you are talking about "match grade" and .308. You might find it easier to sell the 77 and find a suitable target rifle.

Just to be clear, I'm not sure if it can be done or not, but those are two obstacles that must be cleared if it is possible. I believe those two things make it more expensive than it's worth to make the conversion. I love the old tang safety M77, but they don't always make for the best target rifle. It's pretty rare to see them in any competitions. A Remington 700 might be your best bet.

I think you are probably right about price.I think I would be money ahead if I bought a target rifle already built.

Quote:
* 22-250 and 308 will fit in the M77 short action just fine. * 22-250 and 308 have the same rim size, head size, etc, so bolt face, extractor, etc, are all fine. * 308 does not have a rebated rim. * It will work perfectly well. I would call the folks at McGowen Barrels or Shilen Barrels. They can thread, profile, chamber and crown the barrel, and screw it in and blue it for you. They can also true your M77 action and bolt for a very reasonable price. Your rifle will shoot much better than if you just take it to a local smith and ask him to screw a new barrel into it.

The .308 and the 22-250 have the same rim diameter .473 and the Ruger short action handles both cartridges . Now as for making a target rifle there are much easier rifles to tune ( Rem700 ) being one . I've never been a fan of that angled recoil lug on the Rugers .

I prefer controlled round feeding over push feed.I have a Rem 700 in .243 win.Good rifle but I like the Ruger and Win. model 70 actions better. If I could I would like to build my 22-250,from the post Scortch posted,I will look into it further. Thanks Scortch!

I stand corrected. Sorry for the misinformation. I'll check the stats instead of relying on memory next time.

Despite feeling like a complete bonehead; this is good news for me. I can take any old .308 and rebarrel it to 250-3000 (the 22-250's parent case).
