Remington Model 6
Anyone familiar with the tiny little Remington Model 6? I've got one that needs a few parts, and some tender care. I posted a thread on "The Smithy" also asking for help. Any info or pictures greatly appreciated. jd

what pictures do you need? Mine is disassembled.
Is it a Model 6, or an Improved Model 6? |

I believe mine is simply a Mod. 6. The receiver appears to have the same configuration as the one on your website.
It looks like there must be a firing pin assembly that flips up, or maybe rolls over to expose the chamber for loading. Whatever it is, it is missing, as is the hammer. Also missing are the pins that would hold both in place. A picture of these parts, either in place or out would be helpful. My greatest hope is that I can actually lay hands on one of these little guns and see just how they function. I think mine is complete enough that it could get there. jd

I just went on Numrich, and they list Rem. 6 Improved, or the Rolling Block 6 Single Shot Rifle. Are the Model 6 and the 6 Improved similar? Are they both the Rolling Block 6? Hmmmmm. So many questions, so much time. On a cold day like this I love it. jd

If it says "Model 6," then it's not the "improved". They are a falling block action. I'll try to take some pictures in a few days. BTW- the "improved" gun-wasn't!

As Bill posted, there was never any Remington #6 "Rolling Block" - they're all a tilting/pivoting block action.
It's just that many simply look at them externally, and assume they're rollers. Numrich lists the rifle with the other rollers, God knows why. It sounds like you need an entire Breechblock, Breechblock Thumbpiece, Breechblock Spring, a Breechblock Pin, a Hammer, and a firing pin w/ it's retaining pin. http://www.e-gunparts.com/products.a...OT%20RIFLE&MC= BTW - The entire rifle's MSRP in 1902 was $5.00 . |

It looks like some of those parts are available at Numrich, and some aren't. Maybe I need to find a parts gun so I can have two that aren't complete. jd

If they have the breechblock and hammer, the smaller parts are easy to make.

Ya just know that stuff is layin around out there, posessed by folks who don't even know they've got it. I'd better get ahold of Numrich, and get what I can. The small stuff isn't that expensive. Breech block and hammer I think I'll need some luck for. I've seen guys start a project like this and wind up owning 2 or 3 guns in various stages of disrepair. jd

Hi yall, my first post. I found this thread searching for pictures for a model 6, I'm writing a book. Thats the most beautiful model 6 on bill's site, once a cheap boys rifle now a piece of art. I dont know if you still need the parts but I have a complete rifle including the breech block, hammer and firing pin as well as all of the springs and pins, complete rifle disassembled. I reproduced it is the reason its in pieces. I wouldn't expect you to trust a first time poster but I sell on gunbroker and could list it there.

Jerry
I may be interested in your 6, as I want to reproduce it myself. Never thought about it until after I engraved mine. My email is [email protected] |

Guys,
If you reproduce it, my suggestion is that you replace the hammer spring (currently a leaf spring which applies more force to the hammer as it is cocked) with a coil compression spring. If you mount it correctly, you can have the spring pointing JUST above the pivot point of the hammer when the rifle is fully cocked. This "variable geometry" results in very little load being placed on the sear/hammer engagement and the resulting trigger will be almost dreamlike ... I've never seen a Mod 6 Improved, but I have often wondered if that improvement was what they made. Also, be very careful NOT to cut any sharp/square internal corners on the breech block ... if you are using a mill it can be tempting/quick to do, but will result in HUGE stress concentrations and a failing breech block is NOT a good thing in this design. Oh yeah ... one last idea ... quick swap barrels for both .22Mag and 17HRM are totally viable with this design ... Have fun, Saands |

If you want a Remington Model 6, John Taylor at Taylor Machine has one he is willing to part with, or he can make parts for you. His contact info is in the link in my signature line.

Mine is going to have to be a future project when I have a little more play money.
Jerry, from the excellent picture that you posted, it looks like I need part #s-5,6,7,11,13,&23. Not quite everything that moves, but close. Probably something broke, it was disassembeled for repair and -- who knows. I rescued it from going in the dumpster. Talktyall later. jd

The leaf spring works just fine. And the Mod 6s have good trigger pulls.
The .22 mag is too long to load, I believe-and I'm not sure the action is strong enough to handle it. But, thanks! |

I know this is an ancient thread, but its an ancient gun, so...
Here is a picture and discussion of one built from scratch (except $5 bbl). http://www.go2gbo.com/forums/index.p...199913.30.html One may need to get logged in to view it; don't know, but if all you need is a couple parts, they are as close as a piece of scrap, hacksaw and file. The whole gun only cost 10 bucks cash outlay; first shot in the field paid for it w/a fox worth $15. (Jerry's book was well worth the $5 download price.) |

That looks more like a shotgun, but the later mod 6 had a cast receiver like a shotgun. Nice collection, by the way. Like those DB ML's.
I might have a picture I can post, but at the moment, I may not post attachments. The early 6's were a real thin action. Only a little over half an inch. |

The Model 6 never had a cast receiver. They were 3 pieces, pinned together.

The "improved" mod 6 did have a cast receiver, but none of the parts will interchange. Makes one wonder why Remington didn't just give it a different number.
I've only seen one "improved " mod 6, and that's been a few years ago -you know what I mean. It was a much heavier receiver, and if not cast, gave me that impression. Frank DeHaas' book, "Single Shot Rifles and Actions" wrote up the differences, but didn't elaborate on receiver design, only the improvements. Last edited by cornbelt; January 21, 2012 at 03:59 PM. |
