Old question, maybe new twist...
I know this has been asked and discussed a lot, but sometimes the answer is "wait and save your money", or "buy both", and not everyone has the $ to do that. As much as a $350 SKS appeals to me, if I only own one, I'd feel much better with a USA made and chambered mil caliber rifle, both for patriotic and long-term ammo availability reasons, so I've decided to go 5.56 / .223, but I don't want to break the bank. So here goes...
With a budget of $650 and the idea that you will only want one 5.56/.223 semi-auto, which would you buy and why? 1. Entry level AR - M&P Sport, DPMS Sportical. Pros - AR platform, very customizable, upgradeable, common and cheap mags Cons - is a $650 AR worth buying? 2. Kel-Tec SU16 C Pros - foldable, portable, very lightweight, takes AR mags, piston action as opposed to direct impingement Cons - new design, long term reliability not proven, if something breaks, can parts be found and do smiths know how to fix? 3. Mini 14 Pros - proven reliable design, Garand action, "traditional" look and feel (if you value that) Cons - proprietary mags, hi caps expensive and not as common as AR Last edited by RH; September 29, 2012 at 12:53 PM. |

Between the three, I'd go with the AR or Mini. Between those two, I went with the Mini and don't regret it at all.

I'd go AR and with the $650 (or slightly more) budget I'd go PSA. The S&W M&P-15 Sport isn't a bad choice either, go with it over the DPMS.
