.357 suggestions
I was wondering what gun manufacturing company makes a good affordable .357 revolver. I would like to buy a new one but for the right price would buy used. What are your alls suggestions?

That would be easy, a Ruger SP101, 2.25" for carry or 3" for woods work. Those run around $500-520 in my neck of the woods. Or a GP100 3"-6" for a little bit more.

Affordable??!! What will it be needed for. Small CC. 4" mid sized for trail or home use or a hunting revolver. Today not much is affordable new . I guess a DA/SA is wanted. Look around for a used but cared for revolver. Buy warn off is fine just not rusted. An L frame 586/ 686 s&W, ruger any, dan wesson 15-2 series would be a favorate of mine as barels can be changed a used prices are still low enough to make them a worthy buy. Maybe an eaa windicator 2 or 4" barrel for well under 300 dollars new will serve your needs. .

S&W are beautiful guns but pricey. You would be looking at a Ruger Blackhawk, GP100 or Taurus. One of the best shooters I've ever owned was an older 6.5 inch blackhawk.

S&W is a little more money ...but they also hold their value long term as well / and they have very good triggers.
For a 6" gun in the woods...( not sure what deer hbting is ??) ...but I'd go with a S&W 686 model ( they're stainless, the L frame is a nice weight )....good, solid guns. You should have no trouble finding a number of 686 models at local shops or at your local gunshows hopefully ....last show I went to, 686 models in 6" were all over...( prices are $ 500 - $ 650 probably )...depending on condition. |

For hunting, I would tend to prefer the Ruger New Model Blackhawk for just under $500 out the door locally (new). But I would rather pick up a good, used Blackhawk for less.

If you're lucky you might find an old S&W M 28 with a 6" barrel. They're about as solid a gun as you can get. They're also very easy to work

I 2nd the thought on an old model 28 as well....there are a lot of them out there with quite a bit of holster wear....but still in good shape mechanically...so worth a look for one at the gunshows, etc...as well....

A good used S&W will serve you well AND increase in price. Things Ruger and Taurus won't.

If hunting is your goal I'd say get a Ruger Blackhawk. They are excellent revolvers and you should be able to find one for a decent price.

If you are looking for conceal carry I would suggest a Taurus 617. 7 shot snub .

I think a S&W N frame 27 or 627 would be best. While 357 may be small, IMHO, the 627 would make a fine 0-50 yard gun with good hollow points like a Gold Dot or XTP 158gr JHP.

GP100 in 6" barrel is the best .357 out there.

countryfried Yes you do want a 6" barrel , maybe even 7 1/2 but 6 is fine. Use heavier bullet weights , 158 to 170 and keep shoots to what you can keep inside a small paper plate in field conditions ever time.

I second the S&W 686, or the 586. I guarantee you will never look back.

Ruger GP100 in 3". S&W is a great gun, but I wouldn;t buy a new one with the lock, frame mounted firing pin, and MIM parts. There's a tagline i read somewhere that reads "One day about a million years in the future, an upright intelligent cockroach will dig up a GP100, dust it off, and blow out the thorax of another upright intelligent cockroach".

You should check out Dan Wessons. They aren't made anymore but are very strong with superior long range accuracy(proven). For the money it would be pretty hard to do better. Also in 2 minutes you can change your barrel to a different length barrel. Ruger makes good revolvers for the money also and you should be able to find one for less than a Dan Wesson.

im gonna say on this forum s&w 686 and ruger gp100 pretty much rule. It seems then you have dan wessons, and redhawks, both great guns also, just as good maybe even better in some ways than the former, but not mentioned as much only because of their relative rarity. You find a Dan, or redhawk for a good price, jump on that, otherwise its ruger gp for 600$ +/- or 686 for $800 +/-.

Normally I would say you would get good advise here, but for hunting a Blackhawk is way better than a GP100 or 686 and less $$$.
