Hi, new guy, first time loading. I found this load on Alliants web site, 9mm loaded with 5.8 gr. unique, cci 500 primers, with hornady 124 gr. hp/xtp. OAL 1.1" Is this to hot a load? Thanks for any help.

Per my 49th Lyman manual...

125gr JHP
1.075oal
4.5-5.0 Unique

I wouldn't do 5.8, no. Sounds very hot to me. But I just checked the site myself, and there it is...5.8 with 1.12oal and 1,180fps.

at nearly 1200 fps, assuming a 4" test barrel, that is definitely a hot load. That would have to be in the very top of the pressure range, I think.

If you look at the .38 special, 6 grains and a 125 grain bullet create a +P load at about 100 fps lower velocity with a significantly larger case.

The only 124 gr. load I saw on the Alliant site used a Speer Gold Dot Hollow Point and was loaded to a minimum length of 1.12". Didn't see anything with a Hornady XTP.

Different brands of bullets can have jackets made of different materials and have more or less bearing surface. This may result in different pressures than noted in the recipe. That 0.02" can also make a difference in pressure. Note that a different brand of case than the Speer that was specified can also change the pressure.

This load, as in all loads, should be worked up to in your firearm.

Do you by any chance have a reloading manual? Which one?
