survey of premium 6.5mm hunting bullets
I just bought a 6.5x55 rifle and (like a kid in a candy store) I've been collecting info on premium hunting bullets for deer and elk. I put together the table below to help with my choices, and thought it might be useful to others. I limited it to 120+ grain bullets, and left off standard designs (Interlocks, GameKings, etc.). In cases where I found conflicting B.C. numbers, both are indicated. Prices are the best I could find at Midway, Powder Valley, and Grafs. Feedback/corrections are welcome.

I've found nothing better than the 140gr Partition for my 6.5x55s. Oh, looky they are on sale right now for less than $16/box.

what does it mean by factory seconds?
If they are still good - I assume they are are, those are a hell of a deal! The cheapest I've seen them are $49 Canadian for 50 (I am assume not factory seconds.) |

Those are seconds which is fine by me as I've never been able to tell the difference between them and the first runs out of my rifles. I've got a bunch of 6.5 stuff built up but no rifle to shoot it in until my rifle gets back from the smith. I would buy a few bags of these bullets and give them a try, since you want premium bullets only.
Don't discount standard hunting bullets as well. At the speeds that the 6.5X55 pushes the 120+ bullets they work just fine. I've even got a few boxes of 160 grain Round Nose to try in my 6.5 when it gets back. |

I've shot quite a few deer and antelope with a 6.544 Swedish Mauser. It would put down animals with athority. I never did use it for elk, as it was iron sights and 20" barrel.
I have never had good luck getting Barnes bullets to shoot accurately in any rifle. It took over $400 in Barnes bullets to figure that out. I would strongly recommend the Nosler partiton for elk. Although I do not recommend the 6mm Rem for elk, I have taken 5 elk with my 6mm using 100 gr Partitions. Hunting deer in the late season with the 6mm, I would happen on an elk, and with very careful shot placement, never shooting over 200 yards, all were one shot kills. With that knowledge, I have no doubt that the 6.5 140 Partiton will do the job on elk.

Not in your comparison...
But I've done a fair amount of hunting using the 120gr Nosler Ballistic Tip in my 6.5-06.
It's a very accurate bullet with good B.C. numbers, and I've used it to 1000 yards for F-Class/tactical matches, too. |
