is tape safe on a barrel

i am making a custom stock and am planing to paint it i want to paint the barrel so i was thinking about using tape to cover it and paint over the tape
will tape adhesive hurt the metal in any way if it is left on for long periods of time (months - years)???? is there a way to paint the berral and in the future remove the paint and not the blueing???

i'd just make sure the metal is nice and clean first, and spend some $ on the blue painters tape. I think you would be absolutely fine, and if you did get some glue residue on the metal, a bit of acetone/mineral spirits would take it right off.

That has me confused what you want to do. Why not just take the barrel off the stock?

acetone doesnt eat up the blueing??
i thought about paintes tape as well i will have to see how well it sticks
i am doing a digital cammo and it takes a lot of work to make it look nice it is done be layering stickers and painting and the more stickers and paint and so on till the all over lap and i was afraid that painters tape would get soggy or it would peel up when i remove the other stickers
this should link you to you tube so you can get an idea of what i am doing
if it doesnt it isat youtube .com under "the best digital Camo Tutorial"

If youre not using one of the more permanent paints, like Brownells Aluma Hyde II or something similar, just paint the barrel along with the stock.

If you use something like Testors or Krylon, it will come completely off with just a little work. Blue wont be damaged either, and actually, the paint helps protect it.

I never used it for painting guns, so I cant help you out there. Testors Military Flats model paints are mostly what I use. They arent all that expensive, and they have pretty much any color you might want to do any of the military type patterns.

I have used some of the Krylon Camo Ultra Flats, and it works well too, but they only have a couple of colors.

Use "Duck" brand painter's tape with the lowest tack level available. I use the stuff quite often on many different surfaces, incuding more delicate metals. It peels away leaving no residue and the lines are nice and clean
