which 9mm

I have been thinking about getting a 9 mm. I would like to keep it under $500. I would also prefer a single stack but don't have to have it. What are your recomendations?

For compact carry...

I love my Sig P290, but will be a little over 500. Lots of people love the Ruger LC9

There are lots of Walther P1's still to be had if you want something classic.

Kahr CW9. Mine's run 100% since out-of-box, soft shooter for a lightweight, suprisingly accurate. I get a nice full grip on it yet it's quite easy to conceal... Love the no-safety simplicity.

So Many Choices

The good news is that there are literally a ton of prospective candidates; the bad news is there are literally a ton of prospective candidates if that makes sense? Also, what's the primary purpose (your preference for single stack sounds as though CCW).

That said here are some choices that I can personally attest to (now with the current hysteria supply may be spotty but they should be back-orderable at the very least):

1) Ruger P95 (new SR series shoot well when I rented it to try it out and is a bit more expensive but also great guns)
2) S&W Sigma 9mm
3) Taurus PT-92 or 24/7
5) Arcus 98 (great little Browning-like clone but it's DA not like the SA 94)
6) Kel-Tec P11 (very hi-cap compact 9mm)--PF9 is the single stack model.

As I said, there are lots out there and I just named a few.

*I know it about 15% more than your budget but if you can swing a Glock you can't go wrong (26 is a great little compact that will accept all Glock mags).

It's going to be right at your limit, but it's hard to go wrong with a walther PPS

For $500 my first recommendation would be a used glock or M&P. I've also heard good things about the Smith&Wesson SD9. Ruger P95 is a great gun.

No complaints with my S&W SD9 VE. Well within your budget.

Would depends on what you want it for. I paid less than 500$ for my full size M&P. Same for my RIA 1911 in 9mm, and my SCCY. Those are the only ones I've bought recently. I like all three, but they are indeed very different guns. My favorite of those would be the 1911 (that surprised me!) but I usually carry the SCCY. Figure what you want it for, do some research, and in that price range you should do fine.

CW9, Sheild, pf9 and Nano or the smaller sized that conceal very well. the nano will need an extension to offer a full grip for most. Then a bersa bp, pps and double stacks after that.

Sig, and used of course!

I've also got a Walther P1 with the hex pin.

Ruger SR9 full sized. $399.99 plus tax out the door. Great trigger, accurate, dependable and reliable, great warranty and customer service, too. Or get the SR9C, same price, same great features, one 10 round, one 17 round mag with grip extension (depending on your locale). Shorter barrel and sight radius but still a great shooter and my daily carry.

+1.

A little over $500, but the one of the finest single stacks going. The gun is a compact but shoots like a full size. Easy to conceal and easy to shoot.

A good second choice would be the Springfield XDs.

If you want a full sized gun, the S&W Sigma or Ruger P95 are good reliable guns.

+2 on the Walther PPS. It's a little more than you want to spend but it's well worth it.

I have never shot a Bersa BP9CC but considering Bersa puts out a quality product I wouldn't hesitate to pick one up.

I just bought the BP9CC because I'm female and loved the slimlined grip (single stack) and the great trigger...light and crisp. I like it for carry, but for the range I'd definitely get something with more capacity. Mine was $369 with two mags and a small plastic case. Factory mag is msrp $48.

A used sig 225 should fit the bill - single stack, 9mm, and generally $4-500.

Do you have a preference for da/sa, striker or hammer?

How about an alloy / metal frame vs polymer?

Here are the nines that I have had any experience with:

Brother's Glock G19 - liked the compact size and weight, didn't really enjoy the initial impression of shooting it, but I think with time I could warm up to it

Friend's FN FNP9 - instant winner, I cannot say enough good things about this pistol and recommend it highly

My SIG Sauer P226 (old German one, holster wear, no rail) - bought it used. Liked the mechanicals from day one but didn't warm up to shooting it until I found the right grips. Now, I doubt I'd trade it for anything at any price

Friend's Ruger P(89?) slightly older da / sa anyway... enjoyed firing this one. Nice feel and mild recoil

All above were purchased under the $500 mark, I believe the P226 is the only one to pass the "limp wrist test" which simulates defensive fire while injured.
