Question About Wadcutters
Has anyone tried out Berry’s plated .38 cal. HBWC’s? I normally use Speer factory HBWC’s for target shooting with both .38 Special and .357 mag. I am down to my last couple hundred rounds, and was considering trying out the plated ones just for grins. I thought I’d get some opinions before I ordered up some though.

Hcl
Go with any "Quality" Hard Cast Lead
For target and relatively low velocity (< 1k fps) No leading I used to use National They were fine but I understand National has gone to hell lately Save a fortune

I've been shooting pure lead DEWC's for twenty years. I never saw a need to plate them. They don't lead my 6" .357 barrel too bad. And they are a heck of a lot cheaper.

I use the "Laser Cast" brand bullets. They work plenty fine. Even in full house .357 loads there is little leading.

Wadcutters
The last Hollow Based Watcutters I bought was a 2,000 count of Remmington HBWCs. I loaded them with Winchester 231.
I used 3.0 grains of 231---Any hotter [700 fps] and they will tumble. For a BBWC I went to 4.0 grains of 231---900 fps and they did not tumble. No leading with either loading. |

I use double end wadcutters so I can put them in either way and not have to get out the bullet puller if I put them in backwards.

Berry's bullets are not the same as the Speer swaged lead. You'll have to work up the load again. They say to use low to mid-range jacketed data loads and no magnum loads. I'd be buying 100 and trying them before I bought in bulk.

I use them for .357 mag and .32 mag. They are very good for what they are. At longer ranges they start to keyhole but to 25 yards pretty accurate.
No problem with leading but I keep them mid range for lead bullets.

HBWCs are usually swaged from pure lead.
DEWC are more often cast. HBWCs need to be dead soft to obturate at the low pressures used for accuracy work. Making them harder would be a mistake sionce the hollow base would not be needed and may fail at higher velocity. You can drive DEWC as fast as you care depending on how hard and what lube. |
