Federal Premium Gold Medal Primers---
Was in a reloading supply store today & bought some small pistol primers
made by Federal-they were Gold Medal match type and I was wondering if anyone has tried them in place of small rifle primers. Wouldn't these be pretty good for .222 - .222 Magnum & .223 loading & maybe the Hornet ? Thanks |

I don't know that I'd want to try it. If I understand correctly, pistol primers have a softer cup than rifle primers, and using pistol primers in a rifle could have the firing pin pierce the cup, and then Bad Things Could Happen.
If it were me, I'd stick with using rifle primers for rifle applications. Just my $0.02, McClintock |

Do NOT substitute pistol primers for rifle primers in high-intensity cartridges like the .222 or .223!
You're just asking for a pierced primer and an action full of very hot, very potent gas. You can generally get away with it for rounds like the .22 Hornet, the .25-20, and the .32-20, rounds that are low power to begin with, but you still have to be very very careful.

Mike is correct dont do it. I would only go by what the manual calls for. Rifle primers for rifles, and pistol primers for pistols. I know things are tough to get but dont take any chances! Keep it safe!
