30.06 and .270 cases. The same?

I was sizing some 30.06 brass from my latest excursion with my m1
Garland and noticed two .270 cases in the pile. To my untrained eye they appeared identical except for the neck. So, being curious, I put a drop of oil inside the neck and tried to resize it. It looked just like my 30.06 case and all the measurements appear to be the same.

Other than an exercise in curiosity, are these case dimensionally the same and is this resized .270 case safe to reload and shoot in my Garand?

Thank you

The .270 is a slightly longer .30-06 case necked down. Going the other way is common too.

The 270 case is a little longer - 2.540 to the 2.494 of the 30-06.

I use them in my Garand. Resize as usual, trim to length.

As others have pointed out - the .270 Win is a longer case than .30-06.

This goes way back to the days when Winchester was working on their new "wonder" cartridge; and based the .270 on the .30-03, rather than the .30-06.

The .270s are fine to shoot, so long as you trim them to proper length.
