Extra hole in new hornady die

Just picked up a new set of 30-30 die's that I have been looking locally for 6 months. When I opened the box this is what I found.

That is normal. Its a vent hole to allow trapped air to escape when resizing.

My 30-06 die has a hole, but it is above the threads.

Just checked my .223 die, and it has the same hole in the threads. Sorry to waste your time. I just figured the hole would be above the threads and not positioned in a place to be under the locking nut, and LNL bushing.

Don't be sorry, that is a pretty crappy job they did on the hole. It is to let excess lube out of the die as well as trapped air. And broomstick is right it is normally above the treads.

I have a set of Hornady dies on my bench (first set of Hornady) but I haven't looked at them nor had them out of the box yet. Glad you posted as I didn't know they did this. What surprises me though is just what Jim243 said abiyt the machining of the hole - I'd be ashamed to let that through QC. Your close ups show good machining on the die itself - that hole looks like a "dented fender" on a new car. IMHO :roll eyes:

Now I'll have to check my set and see what they look like . . . .
