.50 AE vs .454 Casull
What's the difference on these two Ballistically speaking?
I don't really care for the .50AE, and am hoping to impress a friend of mine tonight when he shoots my Ruger .454 I'm assuming the .454 is more powerful, but I've noticed whenever I assume something, anything goes!

In ballistics the 454 is pretty far ahead of the 50...
Typical 454 = 260 gr @ 1800 fps = 1811 fpe Typical 50 = 300 gr @ 1380 fps = 1228 fpe They are both the king of there own realm. The 50 is the king of Autos and the Casull the king of Revolvers. Both really have no purpose except hunting bear or making small to medium cars blow up. They are both large and heavy guns relatively speaking. They are both quite expensive to shoot and have recoil, muzzle blast and a boom that is omni potent....the 50 AE literally sounds like a 50+ caliber muzzle loader when fired........... And I want one of each of them..... in due time.. Shoot well

No substitute for cubic inches.
Specially with a blower too. No need......but a lot of want. Both cartridges are bout at the top of their respective heaps. Sam |

Actual .50 AE chrono data:
CCI 325gr @ 1378 fps/1369 ft-lbs (6" bbl), 1590 fps/1822 ft-lbs (10" bbl) http://zvis.com/dep/depammo.shtml Since most .454 Casull chrono data is 7.5"+ bbl, the two calibers are pretty close in terms of muzzle energy. |

At the muzzle the 50 might have a slight advangtage. Out at 50 or 100 yards the 454 has superior ballistics. The 50 has a nice kick out of a small 6 inch revo.

.50ae vs 454 Casull-
I've been shooting and loading both calibers since their respective births.
The .50ae is not the equal of the 454 Casull when both are in factory loadings, the .50ae on a good day will clock a 325gner@1400fps while the Casull is cruising with a 330gner@1550fps but can go to 1800fps in a six inch barrel. The Casull is designed to run at 55-65K cup while the AE is typically topped out at 40K cup. If we get a little wild at the loading bench and use guns of equal strength then we can push 400gners from either caliber over 1500fps. Freedom Arms six inch Model 83s are used for testing. |

I think those guys over at accurateloading.com have a load for the Casull that is really close to 2000 FPE.

You can reload way hot if you want....you can also blow your gun into little pcs of stainless steel. You guys are as crazy as my old man...2000 FPE from a Casull is about where my dads "evil reloads" are. He gets alot from his 10" barrel DE, but the king is still the Casull.
The 480 ruger is coming up in energy quite a bit lately also...have to keep my eyes open and see what happens. Bigger diameter shells and heavier bullets can lead to good things I posted stats earlier that were pretty much off the shelf rounds just for comparison...... Shoot well

I shot a 454 once at an indoor range. There was a huge fireball, a big boom, and I noticed that there was white stuff like "snow" floating around. I was puzzled about the "snow", and thought that perhaps the muzzle rise caused the bullet to go into the ceiling.
I tried a few more shots, and finally figured out that the "snow" was actually the ceiling which was disintegrating from the gasses coming out of the ports on the Taurus Raging Bull. The whole thing was surreal. My friend who was with me was complaining that the shockwaves were hurting his feet! |

always wondered what it would be like to hear a 454 go off in the indoor range.
BTW, I've created the snow you speak of with my tiny S&W .357. Probably depends more on the specific handgun design. |

I don't know which is more powerful, but I can't stop giggling after I shoot my DE50.
