Never use ar front sight adjustment tools

About 2 weeks ago I bought a Troy sight adjustment tool, the first time I used it, one of the prongs broke off and got STUCK IN MY FRONT SIGHT

Wow.

I don't have a Troy but I have had an old metal one for years. The only problem I have ever had is that it won't work on a SCAR because it isn't long enough to get to the sight through the stupid hood.

How did you break it off in there? Were you twisting really hard or something?

It pretty much just sits in there with no load on it. (Or should anyway)

Mine usually compresses the detent with it's own weight and I just rotate it.

Can you elaborate?

Pictures maybe?

I always used the Lake City tool.

Unfortunately i don't have a functioning camera. I wasn't twisting hard at all, but somehow I managed to get a prong wedged in between the detent and the post. I pulled the tool out of it and checked to see if it bent, IT DIDN'T BEND, IT FREAKING BROKE

I then checked the ground for a prong, no luck, than i got out a fmj round To adjust and pushed down and tried to turn. Than upon further inspection I realized i have a prong WEDGED IN BETWEEN THE POST AND DETENT. The detent is pushed and held all the way down so no easy fix. I wasn't happy because i broke a troy buis. I was using the troy tool because i figured it was better quality than the 4 dollar ones. I was wrong.

On a good note, I now have an excuse to buy me some troy night sights for my p415

I usually just use a 5.56 NATO bullet tip. It's kind of fiddly and not very easy, but the tool won't break, and there's always one handy.

I bought a tool several years ago but I still use a bullet tip. I never seem to have the tool handy when I need it.

Kind of a broad statement isn't it?

Don't know what happened to you but I've used tools and bullet tips, knife blades, pen points, you name it... and they all work ok. The trick is be patient, watch what you're doing and don't force anything.

Yeah, I don't have a problem with using front sight tools properly.

I have been shooting ar type rifles for a long time, i always used bullet tips, nais, and anything with a tip. I didn't force it, it just got stuck between the detent and the front sight post somehow when the detent was pushed all the way down. I didn't force anything.

Well sorry it happened and I hope you can get the piece out. I was mainly commenting that the thread title, "Never use ar front sight adjustment tools" is too absolute.

As long as your front sight tool is NOT die cast metal, it should cause no issues.
