New Ithaca "Home Defense"
Anyone handle one of these yet ? I've always heard how great the model 37 was, but never handled one. Can anyone tell me about this shotgun ? |

They are great shotguns- very well made, reliable, and ambidextrous. If you buy one, hopefully you'll like it as is, because there are virtually no aftermarket accessories available for them (unlike Remingtons and Winchesters).

My 37 was made in the '70s. It's got a 26" modified barrel. I ordered a 20" slug barrel from Ithaca last month but haven't received it yet. I've shot about 4500 rounds from the gun in the 11 years I've owned it. It's held up fine and I'm very comfortable with it. However, if I was buying a new self defense shotgun, I'd go with a Remington 870 Express. The Remington is cheaper and as mentioned previously, has more available accessories. It is a pound or so heavier than the 37 though. On the 870 I owned, I had a Choate magazine extension and the gun was pretty heavy. They're both excellent designs; you can't go wrong with either.

What is the price on a new 37 Home defense model? Compared to an 870 Express?

Looked them up on the website - you can buy them directly from Ithaca.
Big picture link: http://www.ithacagun.com/news/pressroom/jpg/HS-M_37.jpg Link to info on gun: http://www.ithacagun.com/news/pressroom/htm/hls.html Looks intriguing. ~$460 for either homeland security or field classic. 28" Mod Choke. Walnut stock. |
