40 What for deer?

I have a 5-1/2" blackhawk conv.45lc/acp I thought about using for hunting deer,,in this area they are from 75-150lbs mostly on the small side.I read all the literature on pros & cons 44vs.45 which brings be too the next dilema.I also have a 7-1/2" RH 44 "mostly cause this friggin disease of buying guns I have"..

I was wondering about any edge one might have over the other.
I reload my own,,45lc H110,300xtp,21.2gr w/cci 350,,,&18gr 2400 cci 300 & 255gr HC

44,,240xtp 24grH110 still experimenting w/2400.

Can yall think of an instance where I might be sorry I left one or the other at home,or will both do the job?

Which one do you shoot more accurately and quickly? That is the one to take.

I can't think of any deer that wouldn't go down from what you are talking about loading up there. A lot of deer have fallen to less. If you are shooting in an area where you can take a long shot (assuming scoped gun) I would use the 44 magnum with a lighter bullet for its flatter trajectory.

The only place where the 45 colt and the 300 grain Hardcast bullets would come in handy would be to shoot through that 8" diameter tree that will block the perfect standing broadside shot that the deer will give you before he heads to the next county. Just kiddin.

You can't go wrong with either one. Take both if its legal!!

Blackhawk is strong enough...

Try some .45 Super rounds. There is no question the 200 gr JHP would work. The frame and chamber should be adequate since the revolver is good enough for .44 mag.

I agree: either will work, just a matter of personal preference.

My personal deer load is speer gold dot 240jfp in front of 24 grains of VIHT N110. (44mag)

(chuckling)

Both will make a deer dead; be happy.

Shot placement...............

Check with the DNR. Where I live, it is illegal to use many pistol cartridges to hunt deer. They give a minimum caselength and the only exception is 10mm. Otherwise, you've already gotten good advice. Have fun!

If you're shooting the xtp's(good bullets), I would stay with the flat point versions for hunting.

I SCREWED UP MY PREVIOUS POST!!!!! SHOULD HAVE READ 20GR, NOT 24 GR.!!!

I couldn't edit the post. Hope no one just loaded that one up.
