What Works For Me

I know there are lots of different combotions that work. Here is one. Rifle
is a 1/2 stock I built 35 years ago. Hawken style. It is a flintlock .45 cal.
Old H&H barrel 1-60 twist. Load 90 grs. Goex FF .454 round ball, .022 Teflon
coated patch. Shot at 100 yds from sandbags. I have shot many many 50's
with this combo. One of my pet peeves is hearing each year that the modern
gun shooters always have to sight there deer rifle in. I sighted this rifle in
35 years ago. Never touched the sights again.

Who made the old H&H barrel?
The only H&H that I've heard of was Holland & Holland, but that's centerfire.

With a hammer, also helps if the rifle barrel has a false muzzle to start the ball.

Or, the .454 is a typo and he meant .445.

My TC Patriot pistol burns holes in the patch unless I use a .451 ball and a .15 teflon coated patch, once the ball is started with a short starter and a plastic hammer, it can be rammed the rest of the way by hand using a steel ramrod. This also shoots very accurately. A .451 ball is bigger than the bore, an unpatched ball will not drop down the barrel.

Just got up and on my second cup coffee. You know how us retired people
are. H & H made barrels back in the early 70's and 80's. I think they were
located in New Jersry. Then they moved to Flordia. They dominited the
Nationals all thru the 70's. Mike Belle worked for them and made my barrel.
They had nothing in stock, you had to tell them what you wanted.The H&H
stood for "Hoppy Hopkins" he was the owner. Another barrel maker DeHass
worked for them. He lives here in Mo. and makes good barrels. Yes I do use
a .454 ball, which is .004 bigger than the bore. I have gone up to .457, but
did not see any improvement. How do I load, well I might put a video to show
you. Yes, I use a brass hammer to tap the ball about 1/16 below the muzzel.
At this point the ball+patch combo is the same size as the barrel. I then just
take the steel ramrod and push it down, You can do this with just your little
finger on top of the rod. Very easly. Never use a short starter. The Teflon
coated patch makes it very easy. If you think that's bad, my wife shoots
a .410 ball with .022 patch in her "Green Mt." barrel .40 barrel. It measures
.400 across the lands. She can push it down with her little finger also.
We are match shooters and this is how we load, The people we shoot with
do it the same way as I do. Hope this answers all. Phil

Why not?

Why not load a deer load with the same care as if you are trying to win a benchrest match with a tight fitting ball and patch for maximum accuracy? You are probably only going to get one shot at that deer.
You can still carry a looser ball and patch for a quick follow up shot but why shouldn't that first shot be loaded for uncompromised accuracy?

I was wondering if anybody would catch on to this. You don't deer hunting
with a empty gun then load when you see the deer. You can take all the time
you want to load that most important first shot!

Sure looks to me like he answered it. If you had some other interpretation you wanted addressed, I suggest you be specific and refrain from upbraiding someone when they fail to infer the meaning you had intended with a very cryptic question.

Seems like a pretty simple question to me.

He did not answer the question.
He gave, indeed, a cryptic answer about how deer might be hunted with a muzzleloader.

I will answer. I do not deer hunt. Reason, I just don't have the time. I do eat
a lot of deer meat. A lot of things in my life I haven't done yes. I better get a
move on, I'm 66. Farther-in-law always supplies us with plenty of deer meat.
I think the Teflon patching would be great for hunting. My Father-in-law uses
it in his 45 rifle. He's 86 and still hunts. He killed his deer 5 years ago with a
head shot with his Peattea Rem. 44 revolver. He said it was about 35 yds out.
