repair browning a bolt finish?

Is there something out there to repair the hard plastic-like finish on a a-bolt stock? there is a nice gouge from a tree stand, not into the wood, but down to it. He doesn't want to strip the entire stock and refinish.

Good luck with that! I absolutely hate those finishes. They look great until you get a ding in them. I've redone the stocks on 3 BAR's and 3 A-Bolts and luckily the owners didn't want them returned to that factory finish. All of them got stripped, checkering recut and rubbed down with numerous coats of tung oil.

And whatever type of finish Browning uses is harder than hell to get off. It really is a shame they do that to the guns because most of the time Browning uses good wood with nice figure.

Browning uses a catalyzed poly finish on their rifles and shotguns. You can touch it up using Flecto Varathane, build up several coats then sand and polish the patch. It comes pretty close to matching.

Should you decide to strip and refinish . Permatex or CRC aerosol gasket remover is the stuff to use . Spray it on , let it bubble up and scrape with a plastic razor blade . Several applications are required as there are several coats on Browning stocks . Does not wet wood or raise the grain . Clean checkering with a soft fine wire brush .

yeah, i did a beretta with the same finish. stripped with a heat gun and oiled it. too bad he doesn't want to go that route. I'll try the varathane touch-up
