Your thoughts on the GP100 - Page 3

I bought my 4'' SS GP-100 used. It's original owner had bought it new, and had only put a couple of boxes of ammo through it. He sold it to me...FOR $250.00!!!

Hands down, the best deal I ever made. Every time I see new GPs going for almost $600.00 at the gun shows, I just smile.

The GP100 is one of the finest revolvers made. Construction is top quality and will handle any load you can feed it. It is superior (IMO) to it's competitors in the revolver market. It is priced well and has the others beat hands down. Fit and finish is also superior to other brands. You buy one of these and you will never look back. I know we all buy and sell guns but this is one you will likely hold onto and maybe pass it down to your kids.

The thing is built like a tank and I have fired countless thousands of .357 and .38+P rounds through it without any problems.

The felt recoil is is very low compared to other .357 I have fired and it will, without a doubt, outlast the S&W686. Not to say the Smitty is not a great revolver because it is. The 686 is better in fit and finish, but the GP100 trumps in durability and is every bit as accurate.

You may want to get a set of Meprolight or Trijicon Night Sights because the factory ones aren't all that great.

Have fun with it - I certainly love mine and use it for as a truck/nightstand gun.

Mine is a Stainless, 4 inch model

Grizzly Cartridge makes a WFNGC Hard Cast 180gr .357MAG round, do you think the GP100 can handle that?
Im going to slip into Ruger fanboy mode quick. the real answer to is can you? Seriously you'd really have to overcharge a .357 to put the hurt on a GP-100.

Venom1956: You have a good point. I have shot the a .44MAG with 240gr ammo, so I better be able to handle the 180gr .357MAG.

Let's face facts. For a "steady diet" 38 Special is a lot more fun to shoot than 357 Magnum. 357 is doable, but expensive and punishing.

38 Specials in a nice big gun like this feel almost like 22s. Accurate and easy to shoot. Just nice.

If the size isn't an issue, get the 6" barrel, and never look back.

I own a GP100 and really like it. You can't go wrong. Very strong and can handle a steady diet of 357 magnum ammo.

You can't ask for more.

according to the wonderful internet, the reason the gp100 is TOUGH like a german king tiger, is that it was originally developed to be a 41 magnum service revolver.

Mine has a 4 inch barrel which I really like. It seems to maintain good balance when aiming.

... It's sturdy enough that after 6 shots you can always use it as a club, if necessary.

Not if you reload. Just a little more powder. It's not punishment in a GP. Recoil is not that more noticeable if you keep your .357's within reason. Mine is so good I will probably shoot it more than my Python or King Cobra. I'll keep them for prestige, the GP is the comparable workhorse.

I own one.my daughter owns one.I can think of no negatives except it really isn't easy to conceal.
Actually the 158 gr rounds are much less punishing on a revolver than the 110gr and 125 gr JHP's.
In any event they are really hard to break-not stylish,but rugged and reliable and accurate.I'm talking accurate for practical use,not a match or something.

According to my caliper, the cylinder on my gp100 is approximately 1.544" in diameter. Yeah, with that many sig figs, haha.

Love mine. Bought a 4" stainless for $299 and it's the best $299 I've ever spent.

.38 spl is butter and even big, nasty ole' .357's from Underwood are fun to shoot.

I have other guns that I love too, but I think the GP100 would be the one I keep if I could only have one.

Better than S&W in 357 these days, they have those dumb locks. Though I did find an older S&W mod 66? in 357 no lock, in very good shape, for $575.

My brother has a 4" GP100 and I have a 4" S&W 686+. When we go out and shoot together we both shoot both of them and they both perform equally well, about the same accuracy and both have good triggers. The 686+ trigger feels smoother to me in double action and is a bit crisper in single action. The 686+ has the edge also in firepower because it holds 7 rounds vs. 6 in the GP100
When compared side by side the Ruger looks "beefier" but is in reality only 1/10th of an ounce heavier than the Smith.
While we both can only count the rounds run through our revolvers in the 100s and not the 1000s there is much evidence out there that they both will probably be guns that will last a lifetime with a little bit of care.

Well youve heard it from these folks. Im on my second one the first one looked just like the one dan posted it was made in 1995 by serial number i bought it in 2009 . My new one is 6" stainless with the new hogue grips was test fired at the factory in 2012. Tough like german king tigers is a pretty accurate statement. My 4 year old son saw me with it he told me he wanted one just like that when he gets big i told him when im gone this one herell be his pistol. Still shoot heavy loads from time to time but ill admit i do baby it some.
