I was wondering about the velocity differences between a .222 versus the .22-250. We have a 22-250 for varmints and shoot 55 grain. I found a gun in the model my brother likes (Mohawk 600 remington) but it's in .222, and we've never owned one. I know the caliber is about the same, but as for powder amounts, I'm not sure if it will perform as well as the .22-250. It will be used for fox and coyote, and lynx, and even wolves, out to maybe 500 yrds. What do others who have this cartridge have to say about it?

The .222 was a champion benchrest cartridge at one time. Extremely accurate. But, I'd call it a 200-yard gun on foxes and coyotes.

I'd think the .22-250 would max out, pragmatically, at around 400 or so for foxes, and maybe 300/350 for coyotes. Somewhere out there, even the hot stuff drops below "blowup" velocities--and it's the blowup which lets a little .22 bullet do damage.

Most any loading manual can give you the various velocities...

Regards, Art

The .222 Remington will push a 55 grain bullet at about 3250 fps. The 22-250 pushes a 55 grain bullet at about 3650 fps.

That should give you some idea for comparison.
